also for someone who just got scammed on Trademe, make sure the seller is well known, and/or uses ping, scammers are rampant it seems.

    • Sorry to hear, how did the scam work?

      • +1

Bank transfer, not sending goods, account banned, that's it

        • +4

          And Trademe are no help.
Happened with a seller who had 100+ positive feedback.

@RockCartel: I've seen people get scammed as sellers too:

Sells an item to a reseller (highlysuspect)
Reseller says it's broken and they want to return it OR WILL POST BAD FEEDBACK (they don't care about theirs because they have over 1000 trades so won't change %)
They send it back, and the internals have been swapped
            Seller can't prove it

            • +1

@Senior Mouse: This is why I started to take photos and videos of items working (unless its new & sealed) because any dispute then I have proof that before I sent it, it worked.
Now it's not fool proof but at least better than no proof,

And for facebook, never send/exchange until the money is in my account, had one guy a few years ago, use one of those fake banking apps to show he made the transaction but because we were same bank and it didn't show in the next 3-5 mins I told them "No they have to wait till i see the money before i give the goods), told them they can wait around outside or comeback, they went and sat in their car and drove off, the money never came.

For items $500+ i just say I'll meet them at the local bank if its cash they want to pay by. No if's/buts, sure i might lose a sale or two but at least it deters scammers and if they're ballsy to do it in the bank, well at least there's captured footage and stuff.

Also being detailed in your listing helps from the changed mind "oh but I thought" instances

    • Facebook marketplace is worse. I listed a mens jacket for sale. Within 30 mins I got one message from soneone in Bolivia and two messages from rather attractive women where english is not their first language.

It's really easy to spot them though, and even easier to just ignore them

Sorry you got scammed :( it is rampant, every 4th or so used steam deck (currently) or last gen gpu (earlier this year) that you look at would get an email from trade me within 24h that the listing viewed was removed due to suspected fraud, this was not even limited to stupid cheap listings where its a bit more obvious something was not right. While its mostly old accounts that have been hacked, last feedback from 5 years ago etc (which raises caution flags if the price didn't) its also been a few accounts with many recent trades. Like you say I would require ping for any purchase of value, seems common in the questions that people ask for ping to be added as a form of protection now.

  • I haven't sold anything in forever but finally upgraded my PC and figured could be good to flip the old one on TM.

Question, if I am doing a one off sale, is after pay or ping options to offer buys or just stick with bank deposit/cash?

    • Either one is going to result in a extra fee for you unless the buyer covers it. It can make dealing with payments easier though.

    • You can always put a comment on your auction that your happy to do either as long as the buyer is happy to pay the fees for it.

      • Although Trade Me (and the buyer) won't like that. You can't add additional fees to the final price, after it has sold……

        • but its automated so you need to adjust the auction to include those if a buyer is willing, before it closes.
I've done it before this way, but not sure how you do it after auction closes?

    • I like that ping means less mucking around, you know they are genuine buyers quicker as they often pay immediately. Don't have to wait for bank payments to clear and I also don't really use cash. As a buyer, I would rather use ping as there is purchase protection so if there are two similar auctions but only one has ping I would go for that one. Wouldn't worry about afterpay personally, tried it on a couple of bigger ticket items but no one ever used it, and the fees are quite high from memory

  • is there a limit like 100 auctions like usual?

    • +1

      Yes, same as usual.

  • Thanks BigCheese

  • Has anyone managed to get a listing up? I've tried to list my car, but just get stuck on spinning circle?

    • No issues at 6am.
