Unsure about consumers, but when we deal with gowifi they put jetplanes or jellybeans in their packaging and it means that any gowifi box that reaches anyone's desk is already open.

Amazon AU is still cheaper for the U6-Lite APs.

  • Anyone use mikrotik over ubiquiti?

      Different market segments, IMO

If you buy Mikrotik you're wanting to tweak and do things yourself

If you buy Ubiquiti you probably like a GUI

      • Personally, I like the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter line - definitely not forced to use a GUI for those :-)

I have an ER-X and ER-4 here, both probably about four / five years old now, and still up there in terms of what you can do, and speed / ease of management via a CLI.

I haven't had a look to see what is available these days though.

ER4 is a good intro to pro-sumer tinkering, but unfortunately the EdgeRouter line is all but abandonware now… 6 hotfix releases in last 2.5+ years and still on v2.0.9 since 2020…

Swapped to a MikroTik, and while there is quite a learning curve (well, there was for me at least!), rOS is orders of magnitude more capable.

The market is a little bit funky… there seems to be a massive gap between thick, fully-managed solutions like Unifi and the learning curve required for solutions like MikroTik. The reality is that 90% of people are perfectly served by an ISP supplied device these days.

          • @cheaplikethebudgie: For my home setup, the price point was compelling from what I remember.

I can't recall exactly, but the ER-X cost something like $100 I think, and could do almost anything you might ever want at home, plus a whole load of things I'd only seen on professional kit (costing multiples more) prior to that.

I'm sure things have moved on in the last four or five years though.

  • Gowifi are good people - used them extensively for work over the years.

  • Except the thing I want to buy is not on sale…UBIQUITI UNIFI U6 PRO …the upgrade Access point for my current unifi ap which lacks wifi6. I knew it wouldn't be on sale before I even opened the link….this is the model that people want.

    • Perhaps much the stuff on sale is 'older' - to clear it out?

      • Yes, that's right. I wonder if I can buy them from a US store? I'm just not sure whether US wifi AP's are compliant with NZ radio frequency regulations.

        • I can't be certain, but my experience has been that WiFi kit from overseas might use some frequencies that are not 'NZ approved' (no idea what that actually means or if there is a legality issue in there) in NZ, but there has always been overlap with ones that are 'NZ approved' in the kit that I have seen.

It might mean that you have a reduced choice of channels that you can use (since NZ kit might only work with the 'NZ approved' frequencies), or worst case, none I guess!

          • @Alan6984: So far what I have heard/read is that only UK has reduced power/less frequencies. US has still got similar frequencies as NZ. Again, this is my interpretation only, no legal bearings of any sort.

I have an asus router bought from Amazon US and have been using it since an year or so. Again, this is at home, no idea if there are any differences/restrictions of using it in professional/business environment.

  • Out of curiosity as I am not familiar with Unifi range. One of my friend got a recommendation to install 3 Unify nanoHD AP in there 7 bedroom house. He has 1gig fibre. Looking at the spec it's just AC2033 so no wifi6. I am assuming there is way less bandwidth offered compared to any mesh wifi6 routers. Any thoughts?
