Thanks OP, we're due for a restock of our Whittaker's.

Opinions - is it worth spending a dollar more for mainland 1kg over a $10 Pam's, if one was feeling especially bougie? Or are they all the same but wrapped in different plastic?

      Re cheese: the latter IMO

        The big issue here is:

        Mainland Cheese Block (excluding Tasty)

If Tasty was included there's a significant difference. The other types i'm less sure it's worth it.

Digging into the brands, Fonterra has Mainland and Valumetric. Goodman Fielder does Meadow Fresh. Synlait does Dairyworks, Alpine and Rolling Meadow. But it turns out there's more to it than that (2018):

Fonterra/FBNZ and Dairyworks dominate the supply of supermarket house-branded cheese. Dairyworks buys cheddar cheese from Fonterra, which it then cuts/wraps/grates and markets under its own brands while FBNZ (Fonterra Brands) and GF (Goodman Fielder) purchase cheese from Fonterra that has already undergone secondary processing into consumer formats. Fonterra is practically the only manufacturer of supermarket house-branded butter in New Zealand

It's not immediately clear where Pams cheese comes from, but it seems like it might be a Fonterra cheesy-go-round:

FBNZ holds the branded and supermarket house-branded milk contract for Foodstuffs North Island (FSNI). GF currently holds the supermarket house-branded contract for Foodstuffs South Island (FSSI); however, Synlait has recently won that contract beginning in 2019

        • Excellent reply. Thank you. Will just be chocolate for me today, then!

    • Pams cheese will go off much quicker. Have found mold buildup within 3 days once opened more than once. Have not seen other brands do this.

Surely that would be related to how it's been stored

        • Sure, but I store all my cheeses in the same area. Only pams cheese will react this way.

  • I went to The Warehouse today and successfully price matched on Whittaker’s. They didn’t specify a limit so I grabbed ten blocks. When they scanned it up, it came up as a bundle deal of ten blocks for $40. Couldn’t see this advertised anywhere in store and also couldn’t replicate it online.

    • You didn’t buy the Oat Milk Chocolate block did you?
That is on clearance at $3.98 per block which would explain it.

      • Yuck, definitely not haha. Receipt also says Creamy Milk so they didn’t enter the wrong kind either. Wonder if someone else can replicate in store.

        • Not my flavour either - guess that's why it's on clearance!
          Good deal in the end.

          • @bigcheese: That block hit clearance quicker than the K-bar flavours did. Awful stuff.

            • @Plug: I never tried that one either but sounds awful!
