Seeking Advice on When/Where/How to Buy a New TV

I've got my eye on the Sony KD-43X85K 4k tele and I'm wondering what the best way is to get a deal on it. I can see prices dropping in Aussie for last year's models (e.g. LG C2) but nothing similar happening here yet.

Is there a certain time here that last year's models will drop? I've also heard anecdotally that you should go in to places like JB HiFi, Noel Leeming etc and try and negotiate with the salespeople. I've no experience of doing this so could anyone who has, or even anyone who works there, provide some advice on how to do this effectively please?

Thanks everyone for any advice or thoughts.

  • Boxing day really had some good deals on TVs due to manufacturers incentivizing retailers to push out units.

Right now your best bet is checking with NL, Harvey Norman and JB and see what they can do. HN no longer sells Sony's BTW.

    • Also at your price range I'd consider a TCL.
Sony and Samsung's lower end models are pretty average.

Nice! X85k is a great TV. It's full array backlit as opposed to x80 which is edge lit so you'll get better black levels… and HDMI 2.1 is a great idea going forward with the new xbox or ps.

Anywhere between now and september for price drops. I say that because since covid it hasn't been particularly consistent. Typically around mid year we start seeing old going out and new stock flowing in. The brand I worked for (think one of NL, HN etc) didnt necessarily drop the price but the margin amount was changed and incentives for clearing old stock were put in place (by either the store or the brand) so you can't quiet rely on a cheaper online price but the salespeople will be more willing to negotiate downwards (in reality its to facilitate the addons that the brands want like product care / cover but hey, that's a whole other conversation!).

Best around I've seen is normally themarket.com discount when they run a 10% or 11% off promo at the same time as Noel Leeming are having a sale.

The other, slightly more dubious, buy it from noel leeming, they'll discount the TV to fit in the extra warranty and you can just return the warranty within a couple days

    • Hey thanks, some really useful information there. I'm not in a rush so I'll hold out for the new models to come in later this and/or a coupon to pop-up at The Market.

Full array backlit is different from direct backlit that's used in x85k

Without local dimming the black level will only be marginally better than an edge lit TV.

To get full array led you need to step up to the x90k

      • Oh, you're right. I dont know what I was thinking haha, x90k for full array (even then they dont tell you how many zones) Defintely a step up from x80_ though (motion is much better, there's a demo with a train and a pan over some rooftops on the demo instore content that shows it well). I don't like the smoothing interpolation effect personally but I do turn on black frame insertion normally.
