[Auckland] Free Sandbags (Help Combat Cyclone Gabrielle) @ Various Locations (Mairangi Bay, St Heliers & Westgate, 8AM-8PM)

420

Using sandbags during a flood crisis, such as in vulnerable doorways, drains and other openings, will help prevent flood water entering buildings for a short period

Note: Sandbag supplies are limited and people must only take what they need.

Sandbagging stations can be found at:

  • Windsor Park Baptist Church, 540 East Coast Road Mairangi Bay 0630
  • Glover Park, Glover Road, St Heliers 1071
  • 13-15 Westgate Drive, Westgate 0614

These places will be open from 8am to 8pm (or while stocks last) on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 February.

How to make your own sandbags:

  • Scoop 15kg of sand into a sack
  • Fill bags halfway to give the sand room to expand as it absorbs water
  • Tie the bag closed
  • Use sand or heavy soil for homemade sandbags

thanks for the updates….take care evryone..stay safe

  • I went to westgate site at 8am and the line of cars were extremely long, probably 2-300 meters. I just turned around and returned home otherwise have to wait minimum 1-2 hours in the car.

    • similar to other sites, thats why you bring a wheelbarrow too. i would imagine this is not practical for most.
they need to plan these better, have this going throughout the week and just have a team making them so you can just pickup like a drivethru business.

  • Thanks for the heads up

Just been at the St Heliers one. Massive queue of cars, ended up parking quite far and walking down. If you’re planning to come later, suggest bringing one of those beach carts or something similar.

  • Westgate is out of bags at 1030am. Team on-site said the council didn’t provide enough bags. Still lots of sand so byo bag I guess

  • great advice on the article: "using a tarpaulin in front of the sandbags will improve their effectiveness."

  • Does anyone know of any safe places in central Auckland to park the car (including paid) during the storm?

    One more site at Mangere:

    17 Elmdon Street, Māngere 2022

Went there and there are empty bags and spades for you to use. Park nearby, fill up the sandbags, move your car to the site and load your sandbags. I suggest at least 2 people.

Very good of you to share this on Cheapies, Dealshunter! Feeling the love and community spirit/vibe here, due to your post. ❤️

By the way, I’m in Gizzy & I still think it’s great that you posted the above re your region. It gets all of us thinking and posting (and I am an ex-Aucklander, so I care what happens in your region too!).

We are supposed to cop it bad too here in Gizzy, so I am gonna keep an eye on my local council website and Tairawhiti Civil Defence Facebook page as well. Also MetService app or website is obviously good to keep an eye on as well, for any changes to weather watches and warnings & any upgrades or downgrades etc…

Stay safe, fellow Kiwis. Wherever you are. Hopefully we’ll all come through this OK. ✊

Hi Cashmere, thanks for your word of appreciation and kindness. We all come to cheapies for saving pennies. But when I saw this news on my laptop, I thought that cheapies is a great platform to share this important information, so that maximum people can take advantage of this thing. It's not just money savings all the time, but sharing this kind of information is also important, I feel so. Thanks once again. Hope everyone is & will be safe during this bad time. Cheers.
