70

It was $499 this morning and when I refreshed the page this afternoon it became $399.

From memory it was around $650 from pbtech when they last had stock.

The closest comparable price I can find is i9-10850K on Amazon US for $350USD($585NZD)+GST+Shipping

Slower 5800X alternative, without PCI 4. Not worth it even at this price unless you need to use Intel (or you really really like the Avengers).

    • The 5800X is still overpriced and doesn't have an IGP (not everyone is a gamer). Cheap 400-series AM4 boards also tend to be plagued with BIOS issues, and you might need another CPU just to update the BIOS.
The potential problem with these is they're binned, or reverse cherry-picked, 10900Ks, so they're likely lower-grade silicon and less power-efficient (run hotter). Considering that LGA 1200 chips are already infamous for being power-hungry, this means they might throttle on budget boards or with budget coolers.
I would just grab an i5-13400 or 13500 when they come out.

      • You can get a 5800X for the same price though; and ASUS Prime (read: cheap) AM4 boards are pretty solid with Zen 3 from factory.

        • You probably mean 5700X or 5700G. All the 5800X I can find are over $500 or out of stock, and that's not even the 3D variant.
If you already have a good AM4 board and an older CPU to flash the BIOS with, then the 5700X/G might be worth it. Otherwise, I'd wait for the new non-K i5s or price drops on the 12600K.

          • @Solarys: Amazon AU is selling the 5800X + free shipping for 400NZD lol

To be clear, I don't think the 5800X represents the best price/performance in NZ right now - I think that goes to the 7600X at $500NZD.

            • @spren: 7600X is probably the worst value - $500 for 6C/12T and marginal IPC gains is absolutely ridiculous in almost 2023. And just look at how much an AM5 board costs, which is also DDR5 only…
That's not to mention the i5-13600K is roughly the same price (if you buy from overseas) and beats it in every metric. The 7600X should be $300, and even so it's poor value thanks to the platform cost.

              • @Solarys: I'm of the opinion that DDR4 builds in 2023 are obsolete, just because B-die is still expensive and this is the last Intel gen that'll support the spec. That being said, the i5-13600K is much better if you can find it around $500NZD, which I haven't been able to from my cursory checks.

I'm stuck on AM4 with my 5900X so I haven't really been keeping up-to-date, to be fair.

Edit: lmao just checked and the 7600X has already dropped to $440

      • Lots of am4 boards come with bios flashback, and there isn't really a cost premium to find one that does.

12th gen marked the first major improvement in intel for quite a long time, the i5's being an excellent pick for all-round value.
13th gen then brings another massive generational leap over 12th gen and will be a strong contender.
AMD has all but abandoned the budget CPU market and intel is very strong in it right now. With the 12/13 100, 400, 600, 600k being previously unheard of value for money.

To compare the i9-10850KA against current value, it would be easier to use 12th/13th gen intel which would really show how much a 3-year-old i9 is left in the dust against mid tier latest gen rather than am4 which is already quite old itself.

I built a 12400 pc early this year, though not for me, and 13th gen will be another excellent choice in the near future.

for gaming the Intel Core i5 12600K 3.7GHz outshines the i9 ; also you need to take into consideration the price of the motherboard suitable for this processor.

This is what i did, i figured i will do one last budget upgrade with my ddr4/components and sit on it, intel will require another motherboard/ddr5 for 14th gen.

10th and 11th gen are pretty much "waste of silicon" duds, far better to go for the 12th gen i5 and later upgrade to the 13th gen 13600K. Alternatively go for AM4 and the 5800X3D for gaming.

That's the weirdest thing to make a special edition of, it's literally just box artwork which you usually throw away anyway.

    • thats what i dont get, why bother with just the packaging.

Back then intel was just screwing over consumers with that kind of bullcrap like Nvidia is doing now.

  • 12th gen i5, or ryzen 5700g, 5700x provide slightly better performance and much less power consumption.

  • Yeah I agree with all above comments.

i5-12600 is much better and only slightly more expensive:

    • Unless you really need a new PC right now, I would wait for the 13th gen non-Ks, which all come with E-cores.
