Yep. Things may have changed (part-time 10ish years ago, furniture & small appliances), but there's a maximum discount you can give a customer, depending on the product. Say you want a particular bed, I chuck it into the system to see how much wiggle room I have to try and close a sale. Allowed me to sweeten deals by lowering the price and chucking in free pillows, sheets, blankets etc.

yes, a few years ago a salesperson showed me the lowest price allowed on her computer for a bed.. however, one can get prices better than the "lowest allowable" price, either during sale events, or with approval by the manager. so if one is not a hurry, may be worth to wait for the sale event for the item of interest.
