That kind of marketing trickery makes me feel bad.

It purely exists to scam the ignorant.

Can be likened to those AliExpress Sellers that tell the controller of an SD card it's 1TB and sell it as such but actually it's 4GB and anything after that 4GB is literally just ceases to exist.

    • scam?

        It's a 3MP sensor, which makes it a 3MP camera.

You can stretch a 3MP image out to any resolution you like, but it's still a 3MP image. Doing so is 100% negatives (it takes up more space on your hard drive) and 0% positives except for being able to market it as better than it is to people who don't understand it.

It's dirt cheap, yes, but it could be just as dirt cheap without the scummy software tricks.

They could have advertised it as a 1000MP camera, set the software to stretch the image out to 1000MP and it would have been the same net outcome, except it's out of the realm of modern technology so it would be easier to call out on its bullshit.

So they picked a "realistic" figure to trick the maximum number of people.

yeah i get you as most people will not read the specs where its says 3mp CMOS sensos and think it is a 18mp camera

          • @jamesdeal: Exactly and that is by design, employees at KMart sat down and with malicious intent to maximise profit designed a method to prey on people's lack of knowledge around a technology and made it LOOK like they were getting an 18MP camera without actually selling them an 18MP camera.

Reminds me of the TV frequency wars of a decade ago between LCD and Plasma except this time KMart is fighting a battle against legitimate vendors by outright lying about their product. Rather than both sides of the battle being dodgy.

All I can imagine is the kid from a poor family signing up to a photography class where the minimum requirement was a 10MP camera and whipping it out and being told it doesn't meet the requirements.
