  • Wish american express offered some decent rewards like they do in Australia. The hassle of getting a family member approved for $50 lol

    • Hmm, you just need to fill out a short form and send it to them from my experience.

  • Does anyone know Amex NZ do credit checks on additional/supplementary cardholders? or just VTNZ to verify identity?

There shouldn't be credit check for the additional card holder as they are not liable for any expenses or the credit… An additional card hold can basically spend all the money on the card and legally they don't have to payback it's all on the primary card holder.
Although they have do the KYC so it has to be a real person.

  • This is nice, free airpoint!

  • Recently got rejected for the platinum card. Was hoping to book flights with it, just to get the free insurance. The airpoints were nice too.

    • What was the reason for you being rejected a card?

      • Something along the lines of "might not be able to make repayments". Got a letter with that one line reason for rejection.

I have three credit cards but I just use one of it which I payoff monthly. But these folks assume that you might use all of the credit available to you so there is a high chance you won't be able to make repayments.

Last time I got a car loan I had to cancel one of my credit cards and reduce the limit on another one by more than half. Just to fit into their payoff calculations.

  • Thanks OP! I was just thinking about getting the supplementary cards for my parents and this is perfect!

  • if it's for the $50 / additional card member and if 4 additional card members applied, will this be 4x $50 = $200 or will they only give out total of $50 to the first additional card member?

    • The details on their website say “Limited to first approved Additional Card”, so it would just be one $50 bonus.

  • When did this offer start? I just added my wife as an additional card holder to my Platinum card, she received her card 2 weeks ago.

    • Call them up or start a chat in the app saying you’re disappointed you’ve missed out, and ask if there’s anything they can do.

I got 200 more airpoints doing this after I signed up about 2 weeks before the 500 bonus offer and asked them!

      • I was in the same boat. Got approved under the 300 promo and then it changed to 500 days later. Chatted with them in the app, answer was no, nothing they could do for me. Frustrating that it works for some people and not for others; either approve it or don't approve it, don't make it random.

  • Any reason not to get your partner or whoever to just sign up for their own card? 500 airpoints vs 50 is a big difference. Obviously assuming your partner meets the criteria.

      why not both

  • Any way to do partner KYC with a passport number?

  • How long does this process usually take and what does the supplementary card member need to do? My partner is happy to be added but can't be bothered if it's a hassle.

Just to update - I received an email stating it would be processed in 5-10 days. I was in a bit of a rush (needed it done so I could pull the ultimate cheapie and cancel my account before the annual fee came in) so called up to check on the process and they approved it then and there over the phone - no need for my partner to do anything other than provide details/ID during initial sign-up. They do say it can take 8-10 weeks for airpoints to be approved, but I'm hoping they will still honour this after I close my account next week…wish me luck!

  • Sweet. 10,000 points and 75 airpoints here I come.
