Philips 55" 4K OLED Android Smart TV with Ambilight $2,057.65 Delivered within AKL (Click & Collect Unavailable) @ PB Tech

60

This seems to be the cheapest ever as per price spy or price me. The cheapest price before this was around $2200. Have read reviews about this TV before I bought my panasonic OLED and they say panasonic and LG are superior in picture quality but you probably won't notice as the difference might be minimal.

The ambilight has positive reviews and they're saying it makes the feeling more immersive as lights adjust to the sound of what you are watching.

  • Would be interesting to compare in store, however its only stocked at PBTech Head Office so delivery likely needed. Limited to 60hz.

Philips TV is actually a Chinese company "TPV Technology" so it really should be called a TPV. It's a budget TV and overpriced in NZ.

    • It'd still be using LG panels. So can't be too bad.

LG's budget panels which are older technology. Samsung does the same thing for many other budget brands.

Remember you need a well powered controller to display the signal on the panel, and that is often where cheaper units fall over.

On a basic cheap tv you get often get crap UI / firmware and blocky pictures that can’t keep up or make the most of the name brand panel they are attached too.

Just like everything else that's getting imported here.

  • Got my sony a80j last boxing day for around $2.3k (120HZ - initially got it for my xbox series x but just bought a dedicated monitor as well). It is quite the struggle during the day due to ambient light and the positioning in my house. I have to pretty much close all curtains. If theres particularly dark content (GoT, What we do in the shadows, pretty much any dark game) - i need to use 'vivid mode' which makes everything look super fake but bright. So i wonder how the ambient light works and whether it would be a pain (during the day - im sure it would be cool at night)..

This TV reviewed really strongly when it came out - in 2020. It is missing HDMI 2.1 if that matters to you but otherwise looks like a good set. Personally I love the ambilight, makes for a cool immersive experience watching at night with the lights off.
