Kids Toothpaste for 3 Years Old

My 3 years old son refuse to brush his teeth and said the toothpaste taste "hot/spicy", can anyone please recommended a toothpaste that doesnt taste like that for a 3 years old? Currently he is using Colgate Fluoride Mint Toothpaste for Kids..too much drama to get him to brush his teeth everyday…

  • It's probably just the mint that is making him say it's 'hot spicy'.
I know you can get some toothpastes that are not mint flavoured so that might be an option - not sure off the top of my head though.
Even changing to a different 'mint' flavour might help.

What I would say is that at 3 years old you are setting them up for their habits going forward.
I would persevere with the everyday brushing otherwise you will have no chance when they are older, no matter how frustrating it is now.

Have you tried making it fun? Like with some of the character toothbrushes - Minions , or Batman for example?

Our little man really hates the mint flavour too - he too refers to it being hot/spicy. So for years now we have used Colgate Peppa Pig toothpaste…I think its berry flavoured or something like that….there are many others out there too, however just be aware that many of the non mint flavours don't have fluoride in the ingredients. Peppa does.
We used to use GC Tooth Mousse Plus but that just became too expensive, but they have lots of different flavours too.

+1 for peppa. our daughter used that before upgrading to a more minty one.

Plunket advised us to use toothpaste for 6+ year olds for 1+ year olds. Dentists also advise us to brush teeth for them until they are 6 years old, because at young ages their techniques are not very good, and poor brushing results in more damage to the teeth than the benefits obtained from training "independence".

If you're ok for a slightly "older" version then try Macleans Little Teeth for 4-6 year olds, worked well for both my boys, never complained about it being too spicy.

$2 a tub at countdown at the moment :)

Otherwise you can get their Milk Teeth (0-3) version at Catch but will be paying a bit more:

We also use Maccleans Little Teeth 4-6 year olds. That is after trying half a dozen of toothpastes !! They are not mint flavoured. That the only one our son accept since he is 2 year olds (now 4).
It's fluorided at the same concentration as the Minions and Peppa toothepaste: 1000ppm. I believe this is the only thing that really mater.

      • Actually, now that I remember that before Maccleans Little Teeth 4-6yo, we used Peppa one, with blue gel, but they stop making them for a year+ now …

    • Seems to be $0.99 at many PnS now.

  • I remember back in the 80's you could buy a medley of fruit flavored toothpaste for kids from Avon that came on a thing that looked like a painters palette. I'm surprised there isn't a wider range of toothpaste flavors available for not only kids but adults as well. Who decided that nearly every toothpaste has to be mint flavored? I hate mint. I use Oral B vanilla flavored tooth whitening toothpaste, tastes good in the mouth but unfortunately no good for the little one as your mouth burns like hell after using it, also I'm guessing your 3 year old isn't a big coffee drinker so doesn't need the tooth whitening like I do.

Is that the Colgate one with the Minions on it? Both my kids love that one (especially my youngest) but then again, she loves to eat mint fresh out of the garden!

Some good suggestions already. Here’s a couple more (they both have fluoride and have a mild fruity flavour)

    Oral B: https://www.chemistwarehouse.co.nz/buy/90779/oral-b-kids-too…

Also, I think they stopped making the Peppa Pig one?

    • We got a Colgate Kids Peppa Pig one a few months ago that is mild mint gel, same as the Minions and now Bluey, our 3yo uses it and also eats mint from the garden. Looks like there did used to be a Colgate Kids bubble fruit flavour.

  • Thanks for the alternative suggestions my little one was always saying it was “too spicy” but not any more! Happy (for now)
