Z Share Tank - Your Experience

Would like to know how your experience has been with Z Share Tank (within Z Fuel app).
Since that day when Waitomo announced that petrol price may skyrocket and almost everyone went out to panic buy petrol, me and my partner started pre-purchasing petrol in 20L increments within Z Sharetank in case petrol was to go over $3.

The other week my partner decided to redeem her Sharetank petrol however the app charged her credit card for the fill up rather than redeeming the pre-paid litres. The app stated that it bought petrol because it said the price that day was cheaper than the price that was pre-purchased, however that was incorrect.

I'm wondering if anyone has had any rip off moments with this Share Tank?

  • I know that Lynfield Z (in Auckland) is buggy as and on several occasions it has taken 100L and then errored out. Eventually comes back, but frustrating when you end up with a empty sharetank and empty car tank!

  • There is another rule hidden in their T&Cs - you need to have at least 15 litres in Sharetank credit otherwise it goes to the backup payment.

  • Related to Sharetank, what happens if you have 20L in sharetank and want to fill up 30L? Does it use 20L first and take remaining from backup payment or only allows either sharetank or backup payment?
Haven't used it yet so don't know how it works. Got 75L sign up bonus and will be filling it up soon.

    • +1

It will use your Sharetank first then the rest back up payment provided you have at least 15 litres balance.

  • I gave up on Sharetank about a year ago. The local PaknSave is consistently 30c cheaper than the Z across three road from it, or any other Z in the area. It was great when you could stock up 30-50cpl cheaper out of town on a road trip that would last you 6 months, but that's not the case any more it seems, they're all overpriced imo, consistently the most expensive around me.

Second thing that irks me (and I know I'm going to sound entitled here), they haven't offered bonus litres when I've tried in recent times, and to make things worse, when they used to offer bonus I could never get the full bonus for buying 1000L after the first time, because they always left <1L of fuel in the account that I could no longer redeem, and you can't have more than 1000L in the account at any time.

    • Hi @CheapAzChips,

When you say that, '… they always left <1L of fuel in the account that I could no longer redeem …" what do you mean exactly?

For example, if you have 50L in your account, and you go to fill up, and put in, say, 60L, the first 50L comes from your account, and you pay for 10L immediately. Isn't your account now completely empty?

      Maybe I am missing something?

      Thanks,

      Alan.

      • I'm not sure exactly, but for some reason out never completely emptied. Right now I have 0.3L - I don't know, maybe if I redeemed a few litres it would empty it, but that wasn't my experience. I don't know, maybe I was doing something wrong

        • You need to fill the sharetank to over 15L (I believe) to be able to use it (might be wrong on that), so maybe try filling it with, say, 20L, then try filling your vehicle with, say, 30L (or more), and I would have thought it would completely empty your sharetank, and then charge you there and then for the remainder of the cost.

If you have already tried that previously, then I have no idea sorry.

  • I didn't have any litres in my sharetank and I drove in and it automatically put multiple $150 holds on my credit card - which then meant it declined for the $40 of petrol (we rarely use my car so I'm only putting small amounts in while I'm WFH) Took couple of hours on the phone to the bank to be sorted.

  • One of the limitations with Sharetank is that you can not stack other discounts e.g. flybuys.

May be useful to lock with the lower fuel tax rate in the next month or so before it goes back up.
But generally ok for me to redeem (sometimes the scanner does not work very well at pump, but can also be used at the counter afterwards).

perhaps the greatest benefit from z electric esp from the one off joining bonus, without a contract.

  • It's always worked fine when I have used it, but multiple times I have had my account suspended when topping up because the card didnt go thru, either because I was over limit on it, or because their fraud protection kicked in and declined it. Seems stupid to lock the whole account making me call them for that but that is how they roll.

I gave up for a while but when having the empty rental property with Z electric I got a signup bonus and a few litres per month from them but their total lack of any customer portal or sensible billing meant I had to give up on them. What sort of power company doesnt let you update your payment card online and expects a phonecall to do it? Hopeless.

    • agreed about billing is very minimalistic and limited or no website online viewing. Nevertheless, it still has the best signup bonus around without a long term contract. at current fuel prices certainly at least staying in short term is very good value for money
