Buy first, think about what to do with it later!

  • might not have a standard 24 pin atx power connector, so if you're thinking of upgrading the psu you might need to find the appropriate adapter.

probably all good for web browsing…. …..roblox(?)

$80 i5 is out of stock. $99 one looks like a relatively worse deal

There's an $230 i5 6500T, 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, Windows 10 Pro SFF PC that looks interesting though - would probably be much more responsive and efficient than the other 2, might be worth switching the title to now that the i5 3470 is out of stock: https://techtraders.co.nz/shop/all/desktops/hp-elitedesk-800…

  • How good are these?

    • Which one?

      • $230 one

        • its quite a good deal compared to what you can get around here for non gaming use, it does have 2 display ports so you will need to get a converter to hdmi for tv,can decode h265, can do 2x4k monitors.
They are popular for virtual pc, or plex, media pc, i got a few for non tech people, just to browse etc.
I dont know what power supply it uses

As @gske alluded to above, the EliteDesk's 800 G2's 100% do not use a standard 24 pin connector.

That being said, HP is my go to brand for business/enterprise grade desktop hardware, if you want a non gaming PC these are likely to be fine.

Thats a pretty sweet deal - the kind of thing to buy the Grandparents or Mum/Dad before they go and blow $1900 on something at Noel/Harvey's etc.

Take in mind that this is the 6500T CPU, not the 6500. It's the low power, underclocked model that really doesn't hold up next to the i5-6500. Base i5-6500s in the Dell Optiplex and HP Elitedesk with 8GB memory and 128GB-256GB SSDs often come up on Trademe ex-lease or refurb in the $150 - $250 range. I have purchased two recently, one for Blue Iris (VPP) and one as a linux box for sharing distros ;)

    • can never have enough linux isos

    • That is true, I just found a 6500 PC on Trademe for the same price. But the 6500T gives you the tiny form factor and low power consumption as an added bonus. Another PC to add to the collection :)

    • Can you show some example sellers where you bought these from?

      • Just do the search on TM. There are a number of sellers. I got my last one on there. An HP EliteDesk G1 Mini PC 4th Gen i7 8GB 500GB for $400 in 2017.

    • Good tip. I'm wanting to dip my toes into the Blue iris game, but I don't think my current Plex server will be powerful enough. From my understanding you need a CPU that can handle h264 and h265 via hardware to really get good results. How are you finding the i5 6500? Getting something at the $200 mark would be ideal.

It handles x2 4k cameras fairly nicely using main stream (4k) and sub stream (480p) via motion detection (Deepstack) and usually is under <50%.
i5-6500 is the first gen to support +VPP for hardware decode.

The Dell Optiplex 7040 seems to be the one that comes up most frequently at a good price.

  • I was just wondering if the price is well enough to justify a good mini desktop for remote desktop exclusively (work from home)? My budget is $300. Any better choice?

    • I bought the HP EliteDesk G1 Mini PC 4th Gen i7 8GB 500GB for $400 4 years ago on TradeMe. I'm sure that would be cheaper now or upgraded further. Use full time work from home. Perfectly fine and fast for browsing, spreadsheets etc. The form factor is amazing. Literally in the palm of your hand. People always ask "But where is your actual computer?"

  • Only the xeon pc left now, which looks to be a quite outdated build that I struggle to see being worth $99 now

    • Five of the Elitedesks showing in stock again

      • Cannot find it

        • Ah yeah tried adding it and it refreshed the page to show no stock :(
