  • If anyone in Rolly/CHCH wants just the drill/driver set. I will give you $150 for the angle grinder…. Save an extra 10$ easy ?

    • And you save $150

    • I'll give you $160 for it, let the bidding begin!

I sold the same model for $320 on trademe a few months ago. I got it in a kit, but I already had the same grinder.

Not a bad deal but let down by the cheaper single speed impact driver and 5 ah battery which is a price increase. Last year's three-piece came with a, 3 speed impact driver, 6 ah battery and the same drill and charger for $329 and the year before $279. The combo with the grinder is probably the best deal if you wanting to buy a grinder because those things are brilliant, I have one.

    • Yeh true, I missed the 2019 black friday sale. I reckon they are putting the XR batteries instead of the flexivolt this time around is due to people buying the kit, splitting it up and flooding on facebook marketplace and trademe

Additionally, I think the DCF887 was taken out also due to the huge bad press it was getting on youtube. Few channels was showing DCF887 smoking it up and breaking down after a few weeks of use. DCF787 probably is a safer bet. And also cost of course.

      • I have two of the 887's, put a 55m2 deck in with them and didn't have the issues others were having. And I didn't go easy on them haha!

YouTube is full of people with agendas either brand fixated or monetary motivated. I have put in over 3000 batten Screws 14Gx100mm & 120mm with my 887 and yes the driver gets hot and then I let it cool just like any of my other electric tools with continual use. Problem with the 787 is that it does not have enough torque for these batten screws if you are doing post and rail for instance. Also, the 6-ah battery has five more cells (33%more) than the 5ah which gives it a considerably longer run time at high torque than the 1ah extra suggests.

      • Dewalt has been struggling with battery cell supply issues over the last several months. I think that is the likely the reason there packs have the 10 cell 5ah, rather than the 15cell 6ah flexvolt. Also notice that the redemption deal's are for stuff other than batteries this year (They are doing the floodlight on outdoor power equipment now.

No idea the reason for the DCF787, rather than the DCF887. Possibly they are clearing a stockpile of the 787, perhaps before the DCF850 (which specs are similar to the 887) replaces it as the lower end impact driver. The DCF887 is getting a bit dated, and is likely to be updated in the next 24 months too.

  • Why are some models only available at one retailer and then another at the other retailer. Is it to prevent them needing to price match and give the 15% off?
It sucks that they only have one battery.

Its an entry level kit. Dewalt's been doing this for years to try to regain market share. Its the old philosophy that once you buy into their entry kit. You're stuck on that cordless platform unless you sell your whole gear. Unless you like having a mix of cordless gear and flaffing about with all the different batteries and chargers of course.

    • I think you are correct. A couple of years ago there was a war on price as they kept trying to beat each other and people were using price beat to get it even better over the black friday sales. Since then they have had slightly different kits between retailers.

      • None of these sets are entry level they are all the XR pro brand. There cheaper models can have plastic casings for gearboxes are lighter with cheaper internal components and then drop down to the Black & Decker range.

  • The DCD795 XR drill isn't listed on their website, is it an old model?

    • The DCD795 XR is the older model with 60Nm torque, the DCD796 XR the new model has a three-position light switch and 70Nm in torque, other than that it's the same.

      • Thanks. It looks like the DCD 996 is a far better drill , but it is difficult to compare the specs of the different models to compare them and the NZ website is full of 404 error pages. I don't think they even show the maximum drill size you can use. Also looking at Makita, which have 140 Nm of 'peak torque', but that could just be marketing spin becuase it then says it is 125 Nm max torque. But they are quite a lot more and don't seem to run the same sorts of specials. Currently have a hitachi commercail grade one which has been great, but failing.

        • Most Makita drills in DCD 795 size are around 60 Nm or less. You are referring to that 40 V model which has 125 Nm and would set you back $700 with a 40 V battery. The DCD 996 isn't necessarily a better drill it's a different sort of drill like Makita 40v for more specialist use as both are heavy. As for the DCD 795 & 6 you would not notice any difference between the two models as they are the same drill with a few cosmetic differences and still have the same Nm as the equivalent Makita.

          • @pdevonporf: Thanks. The makita one I was looking at was still 18 Volts, and is this model https://www.makita.co.nz/products/model/DDF486 . But I see it is 2kg, where some of the less powerful ones are 1kg without battery. I am used to heavy drills so not sure weight is an issue for me either way.

        • Yeah, the DCD996 was dewalts flagship before they released the power detect / flexvolt advantage versions of it (now the DCD999 is the flagship, but seems largely similar other than a little more power). Its a much more powerfull, and higher torque drill.

I have the 796, for what I do with it I wouldn't want bigger for home use. Haven't used the drill press or corded drill since I brought it. Flagship would be a lot bigger & heavier, and mine can make more toque than I can hold without a side handle. Should note that drills that come with side handles (like the DCD996 should be used with them all the time, as they are powerful enough to break wrists.) - On an industrial site I worked on a wrist was broken when a drill hit re bar.

          • @scott: Yes I have the DCD 996, it is quite lethal working up a ladder and can quite easily throw you off. The DCD 796 you can quite comfortably handle with one hand above your head.
