Free - Six Months Subscription @ The Athletic via Optus Sport (Requires VPN Connection to Australia)

Pretty good deal if you're into American sport. I follow GSW (NBA) & 49ers (NFL) and enjoy their coverage of both teams. Decent football (soccer) coverage too by the look of things.

If you don't want to muck around with VPNs, I also found a ~US$1 a month for 6 months deal which I was on prior to finding this.

    • Any recommendation for a good (and cheap) VPN for Australia?

      • If you want just a one-off, maybe something like TunnelBear.

If you want something that you'll be using quite a bit, perhaps take advantage of Cash Rewards 90-95% cashback deals on Surfshark & NordVPN.

I had a six month trial to KeepSolid VPN Unlimited that ran out so I switched to NordVPN and service has been pretty good. I use it mainly for deals like this and watching Australian TV via CoreELEC (Kodi).

Bear in mind that I am no expert when it comes to VPNs.

        • CoreELEC (Kodi)

Do you use this on computer or TV? What channels do you get?

Any guide on this where I can start

          • +1

@justaddwater: You can get it on both. My partner uses Kodi on her laptop, whereas our Android box (Minix neo U9-H) runs CoreELEC (stripped down version of Kodi).

We get the Aussie channels through AU IPTV add-on by Sly Guy / MattHuisman. You can access most Aussie channels without a VPN, but Channel 7 needs it.

How familiar are you with Kodi?

            • @Wakrak: never used it, I think it's some kind of app to stream tv shows/media

              • +1

@justaddwater: Yep Kodi is a theatre software where you can install add-ons that give you access to certain channels. I use it for movies / tv shows (using the paid-service Real Debrid), SkyGo (I have an account), and Aussie TV.

                This guide might help: https://www.tvaddons.co/kodi-addons-krypton/

Once you understand what Kodi is and how to navigate it, you can then install the AU IPTV add-on linked above. Install Kodi on your computer (if you have one) and play around with it. YouTube will be quite helpful too. Feel free to ask more questions.

@Wakrak: Thanks for the homework, will read next time we havre bad weatger on the weekend. Cheers

            • +1

@Wakrak: We use those add-ons by SlyGuy/Matt too (used Spark Sport and Disney+ when I had the subscription)! Although sometimes when launching Kodi some sort of warning/errors popped up w.r.t their repository or something else, but nothing too bad. That guy made me want to learn Python - I believe there is a short tutorial of some sort in his blog - but I never had the time.

    • What was it my bro

  • Also do I need vpn to stream videos on this app? Or just sign up

    • Nah once you have an account, it's good to go. You just need a VPN (for this deal) to get access to the sign up offer. I can send you a free 30 day guest pass if you want. Looks like I have 5 of em.

      • Thanks. Already signed up. I wish there was some sports streaming website like sky sports or Spark

  • Think I signed up for like 1 year for $10, nice deal though.

    49ers (NFL)

Shame about the last few weeks, but atleast Lance looked promising. Got to get me one of those 75th patch jerseys for when we make the wildcard later in the year.

    • I haven't been able to watch these last two weeks but interesting to see Garoppolo still struggle with his passing when the opposition is within 5-10 meters of him.

I need to get familiar with the rest of the team too. Didn't pay much attention last year + still learning the game. I definitely give GSW most of my attention.

      You follow a particular team?

      • +1

Yea, Jimmy got hurt last week (Surprise surprise) and there was a clear drop off when he did. Keep an eye on 54 and 97 on D, and 19 was the number 1 receiver in the league until this week, 71 is one the best LT, and obviously 85 is top 2 TE when fit. If you had any questions feel free to flick a PM, I'm far from an expert, but been following for about a decade.

I've got a gamepass sub through Brazil (Worked out around $100 NZD for the season) and watch the replays without ads due to screwy work schedule. The "Game in 40" is really good too, I watch the rest of the rounds games on that, so can get through most of them during the week.

9ers for sure in the NFL, not too fussy with NBA or MLB, but I'll watch whatever games are on when I'm awake.

Do recommend The Athletic to others too, some good train/bus reading on there.

  • Doesn't look like they carry cricket heh.. would've been just in time for the T20 World Cup!

  • Good idea to cancel the subscription now so you don't have to worry about remembering in 6 months time.
