Home and Contents Insurance

Does anyone have a good experience or deal with an Insurance Company?

  • Tower worked out to be the cheapest for my husband and I. We’ve had awesome service from them!

  • +1

I would suggest shopping around as many as you can - that's what I normally do.

There is no real loyalty from the insurers to their customers, and pretty much they will honour whatever no-claims type discounts you already have.

We've been with both AMI and Tower in the last two years - both are fine. No claims with Tower, last claim from AMI was, I believe, car insurance maybe five or more years ago, and they were no hassle.

    Alan.

  • Cheapest was Tower due to work place discount.
Never had to claim so can't speak to their claims process.

  • Just tried to get a hold of Tower Insurance as I have inherited a house and automatic payments from the estate account will be ending (as the bank account is closing), called at 1pm last Thursday, never got a call back so emailed and haven't heard back from them. Will be cancelling my Tower Insurance policy and going elsewhere.

Worst customer service ever- even the Vodafone Indian call center is better than Tower Insurance

Edit: Even Studylink phone wait time is shorter than Tower Insurance

  • I have a contents only policy with MAS since early this year, after switching from State. In general the MAS policy covers more, has better extras/benefits, and is significantly cheaper (~30-40% less IIRC). Phone support was very good with MAS when I signed up (almost no wait, very helpful and pleasant rep), and good enough with State when I moved/updated/cancelled the policy (bit of a wait, rep was fine). I haven't claimed with either, so can't comment on that.

Also, while not home/contents, I've found AA to be good to deal with. I have my car policy with them, and haven't had any issues with the several (glass-only) claims that I've made: very quick and painless each time. (With the last claim, I filed online on a Saturday evening; the glass company called Monday morning to organise replacement.)

    • Not everyone can join MAS I believe. Quite a select few

      • It used to be only select professions but this is no longer the case. I work for a contact centre and switched to MAS Insurance when I find their Comprehensive Car Insurance was just a couple dollars more than my Third Party Fire n Theft through Tower.
I also hear Trademe Insurance is similar prices to MAS from a friend.

        • That's interesting. Only had good experiences with MAS. Their claims process is brilliant too

  • Anyone tried Initio? They seem to be the one advertised on the homes.co.nz website. They look to be the cheapest when combining home and contents and backed by NZI

  • I just made a claim through Vero, was really easy (other than the fact they took awhile to get back to me).

If you get their insurance through ANZ, you can get $0 excess for claims over $500 plan (costs a little more, but seems to pay itself off after one claim).
