When somebody gives me a new computer to set up I spend most my time getting rid of this stuff.

Honestly I wouldn't install Norton or McAfee even if they are free :) I guess the days for "Premium" antivirus/malware is coming to an end.
Just get a 3 month trial of Bitdefender and keep rolling it over ever 3 months when it expires (yes it works).
Norton has had a well deserved bad reputation for many years. I used to make good money removing it from peoples new computers and installing what was usually free alternatives.
What free alternatives would you suggest? I've just rolled off a trial and looking for free options ;)
Assuming you're using any version of Windows from 7 up why not use the inbuilt antivirus. It's fine. And free. And already installed on your pc.
If i were to run AntiVirus it would be Eset norton background usage is way to high
