As with most things like this, it depends https://comcom.govt.nz/__data/assets/pdf_file/0027/93906/Gui…

IMO having done it several times, Kogan does give sufficient notice. I'm fairly sure they explicitly say when you add you card that you will be automatically charged in 30 days at a minimum, I suspect they also say at other times. Also they do send reminders, I know since I've gotten them despite turning off auto-renewal. Which to be fair probably counts against them. (How was I supposed to know my service was really going to renew? You keep sending me renewal reminders even when it wasn't) Although I imagine most people with this experience aren't coming across it because they keep buying new full price plans, so it's probably not a question you want to explore further.

Of course if you disagree they've given sufficient notification etc, you should complain to the Commerce Commission.

      • I actually got stung a few hundred from kogan forgetting to turn auto renew off. Back in the start of the year I won some free competition for some free data, they make you add a card to the account.

Now to there credit when I eventually noticed money coming out I contacted them and they refunded like 90%

I do think if you buy a voucher you should not have to add a card to the account it's pretty dodgy and it kind of defeats the Prepay part of it imo.

        • they def have a switch to turn auto-renew off on these mobile data sims

          • @FiveOneFive: There is yes, however I forgot to turn it off :(

A good workaround is as follows (tested) - BonFire Mastercard
    1. buy a prepay VISA or MASTERCARD from Pak N Save - get a $25 dollar one
    2. either use it towards your grocery bill, or keep it with the balance on it
    3. register your Kogan account using that pre-paid card
    4. set the account NOT to auto-renew - THIS IS LOCATED IN TOP RIGHT CORNER
    5. even if you forget the above, the payment will bounce due insufficient funds - there is a .50 cent fee though

don't you pay a little for admin/convenience as well, i.e. you don't get the full $25?

i use revolut though so it's much easier to get disposable card numbers

      • Yeah like five dollars, but given that even an empty card can be used to start other free trials without having to worry about being charged its worth doin

      • Is revolut actually available here now?

        • i don't think so, got it when i was living overseas

  • FYI these sims work in the skinny 4g modem without having to adjust any settings
