Wonder if this can be plugged via usb with some sort of adapter as a "portable dvd writer"?
Can get an external housing from aliexpress to do exactly that
A SATA to USB adapter is what you're looking for on eBay/AliExpress. Note you may need 2 USB ports on your computer for power delivery.
This is how I did it when I swapped out my DVD drive for a SATA SSD in my old laptop.
