From $720 if you also want 20KG check-in baggage but no meals, entertainment etc (it's a long flight). And it goes up if you want any other dates.

This is still cheap, but not exceptionally so. EG I flew Singapore Airlines for $820 return, in via Haneda, out via Hiroshima (would have been the same if it was in and out via Haneda), 30KG check in and full service.

So could be good if you are there for a weekend or overnight. But otherwise probably better off hanging out for a better airline.

    • Been twice with carry-on only, for a couple of weeks. It's not too hard with a bit of planning.

    • when was this dan? was this expired deal on cheapies?

I went for a month in March->April and nope, I was signed up for their alerts because I intended to stop over in Singapore so it had to be Singapore Airlines. When it popped up I booked via their website, but they were showing on Google Flights and SkyScanner.

Next time I go (sometime next year) I won't be stopping in Singapore so it can be any airline, but I like the look of the recent Fiji Airways promos because they're full service and it would give me a day in Fiji on the way.

  • When is usually the best time to book flights? We're looking to go to Japan mid May for a wedding/holiday (fly into Fukuoka, out of Haneda). I'm debating weather to book now or wait a bit longer? Atm I'm looking at ~$1200 each with Singapore Airlines return.

      When the stars align.

From my experience there is no best time, just knowledge of what a low point is then gambling that that low point will reoccur on the airline you want. The gamble is that it's possible it won't happen again and you'll be stuck. But the further you are from the booking date, the higher the likelihood, from what I've seen if an airline does a promo once it's very highly likely they'll do it again.

If you want to specifically fly Singapore Airlines, sign up for their alerts, that's how I got mine last time as I wanted to fly them so I could stopover in Singapore. It was a general promotion, rather than Japan specifically.

The more strict you are on your dates, the bigger the gamble, as promos don't always apply for every day of a promo period.

You may find it cheaper to fly into Osaka than Fukuoka, and train/drive/bus down. Just a thought.

      • Thanks for the advice! We were going to get a JR pass anyways so that might be a good idea.

        • With a JR pass using the shinkansen is a no brainer.

Based on a few articles I've read when you Google "best time to buy plane tickets", usually the best time to get the cheapest tickets is around 3 months before you plan to travel. This is because this is the period where airlines know they have an excess of empty seats and try to reel in as many customers as possible.

Also, based on my experience when I travelled in Japan (almost around 4 years ago though, so prices might've changed) with the 7 day JR pass, we calculated you will only save money if you do a large amount of travelling on the Shinkansen's. For example, we travelled from Tokyo —> Kobe —> Osaka —> Kyoto —> Tokyo. If we did not take the Shinkansen from Kyoto back to Tokyo, we would have actually spent more money on the JR pass in comparison to buying the train tickets individually.

      Just food for thought!

      • Hmmm thank you, we plan on starting it Fukuoka then heading north through Hiroshima, Osaka/Kyoto and ending in Tokyo. Will have to price it up and see if the JR pass worth it. We're planning on staying for 2 weeks.

          Xgnite makes a good point.
          Use https://www.japan-guide.com/railpass/ to check.
I was over there earlier in the year for just under 2 weeks.
Used a 7day jr pass for the first half of the trip and then had a IC card for the last few days in Tokyo.
If you know what days you are travelling you can get all the reserved seats done in one visit to the ticket office.

          • @rkl: Wow, this is amazing! I didn't know about this when I went and had to individually look up all the prices on their websites in Japanese…

Fiji often do flights to Tokyo for 550 ish , which includes luggage etc.

as mentioned above, not the best to do long haul without food, entertainment imo. cheap if you want to with no bags as it sounds like it rises the price quite a bit!

  • Hey guys im looking for flights anytime next year 2020 May-August to London from NZ, not very good with this stuff so if anyone comes across anything or has suggestions i would be very greatful

  • i thought for awhile last year, there was no jetstart flight from auckland to tokyo

  • Remember guys Narita airport it miles away from Tokyo

    • Indeed. Haneda is much nicer to fly into, almost in the city. After a long flight that express train from Narita still feels a bit painful ;) But at least you're in Japan!
