This seems to be the go to "high end" thermometer for kids.

• With thermometers the options are *
  Temporal artery (Forehead) - Questionable accuracy, but doesn't disturb the kid
  Axilla (armpit) thermometer - Good accuracy but you need to hold it there tightly sandwiched under the arm against the skin for 30s
  Rectal thermometer - Probably the best method
  Inner ear thermometer - Very quick, accurate if you have correct angle and a good machine.

  I grabbed one for myself, not sure how many tips it comes with, or where the best place to get replacement tips is. Plenty of knock of tips on aliexpress probably.

  Comes with 21 tips according to amazon listing. Bought one cause I have my first kid on the way, but now wonder if it's actually needed? Any parents wanna chime in?

    We have a Braun one similar to this and it is invaluable for parenting. It gives great confidence when you are using the same tool as the medical professionals at the hospital (eg Dr's Nurses etc)

        my tips for kid on the way are:

        get as many colostrum syringes filled as possible starting at 37 weeks as directed by your LMC.

        for clothing you only need the following

        • Full length rompers with zip (make sure zip has two ends and goes from the foot to the neck). Don't buy outside clothes with domes, they are a pain in the ass, only go for zips, and make sure zip is double headed zip. Get the ones that cover the feet and for the hands they have integrated mittens. I recommend these ones or similar - https://cottonon.com/NZ/newborn-zip-through-romper/791861-03…

        • Baby suit undergarments, get ones where the neck opening is very stretchy, or it has an overlap of two materials around the neck to make it stretchy, or has a single dome at the neck. long sleeve under garments are annoying because the long sleeves end up rolling up underneath the outer garment. recommend something like this eg. https://cottonon.com/NZ/the-short-sleeve-bubbysuit/791730-10…

        • The only other thing you need for clothing are hats , blankets/swaddle. babies only need two layers because they are always wrapped up in blankets / swaddles etc.

        you can usually get away without an electric breast pump, and if you need one the hospital will supply one as an inpatient and as an outpatient some of the good midwives will loan you electric pumps. You should however buy a hakka pump which is about $15 and it's all you need. For bottles get Dr browns narrow neck. You only need one if you are breast feeding.

        I would buy: 4-6 internal garments as above, 4-6 external garments as above, 4-6 bibs, 2 hats, 2x thin cotton wraps, 1x merino thick blanket (cot size), 1x regular
        cotton blanket, 1x swaddle (love to dream is good shape)

            @memske: for buying prams the best place is baby expo. If your not sure they run for two days, and just get the seller to give you some free passes to come back the next day and buy something. If your pram is stocked by farmers, then they do 50% off all baby shit every now and again.

              @kiwijunglist: Don't buy merino stuff for <6 months not much point, and merino tends to not be as nice on the skin as cotton. Get merino extra thick blanket instead.

  I have found the one I brought from Ali Express just as accurate as a Braun thermometer.

  I paid $13 for mine.

  Is there any reason why a parent would get this model rather than one from Ali Express or eBay?

    IMO I personally wouldn't want to second guess something as important; its more than just saving some dollars. To me (whether it is warranted or not) I have low confidence for the quality and/or reliability of devices purchased from Aliexpress.

      Yeah, pretty much piece of mind in relation to accuracy and quality. Lots of products can be accurate initially and slowly drift.

  We bought a similar one about 6-7 years ago from Amazon for about $40- 42USD(Amazon had free shipping then). Bought a bunch of tips too. Recently bought Braun tips(20 nos) from Aliexpress dor about $10NZD. They look like genuine.

  These are great thermometers, but I find they break easily. So great with babies, but when you have 3 and 4 year old dropping them etc they don't last much.
