You could also spend less and get a Xiaomi Poco F1 with a better CPU. I bought mine from Aliexpress for like $450 NZD free shipping like 3~4 weeks after it was announced. Should be cheaper now on Aliexpress or elsewhere.

    • Did you get charged the import tax or was it underdecleared?

They mark it as a gift on the package. I've ordered a LOT of stuff overseas, for many many years. I've never been charged import tax lol.

I've bought multiple phones from Aliexpress, tablet, some other stuff and they were all marked as gift (not by my request, but by the seller).

Even the stuff I bought/backed/supported on e.g. Indiegogo/Kickstarter that costs me like $300 did not get taxed.

          • @quote: Try buying something off Aliexpress and the sellers will mark it as gift automatically for you. I didnt do anything wrong. I just bought something online, paid for it and customs processed it. They did their job and obviously were ok with it, else they could have just held it there.

Otherwise, you are welcome to buy the same shit at a more expensive price. Not happy? Sue me.

@quote: Also, I do pay my tax, probably more than most people.

              • @quote: Also, like I said. Sue me if you don't like me not paying tax on items that I legitimately bought. It's not my problem if the seller marks them as 'gift' and also not my problem that customs did their job and processed / released the items to me. Are you seriously getting butthurt for no apparent reason at this? Anyway, I've had fun, but you're a waste of my time now. Have a good day.

    • It's a trade-off though. The Poco's heavier, doesn't have an AMOLED screen, has two rear cams rather than three, and doesn't shoot RAW.
Also buying outside NZ means you give up CGA consumer protection.

      • Depends what you value I guess. Performance is more important to me. Also, buying from TM could get you fake items too. Just gotta be smart and do your research. I've never had issues with electronics I buy online.

  • Damn.. just ordered one from Ali yesterday

  • Tried to post link of same phone from AliExpress, cheapies blocked it saying affiliate links not allowed. If am not wrong, the same phone is available from AliExpress for 410 NZD .
Cheapies won't let me post the link.

Mod Edit: Cleaned up link to remove affiliation, see here

    I'll give it a go

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Global-Version-Xiaomi-Mi-9-S…

If the same model is available cheaper elsewhere that's what us cheapies want.

It's cheaper on Ali at ~$455 NZD but there is a chance it will get ransomed by Customs…

    • Basically this. Buying local has other advantages too such as CGA and shorter delivery time. And then there's the the customs duties risk.

Plus some seem to forget customs use their own exchange rate, and that they include freight. Customs doesn't believe in free shipping either as someone had to pay for it to be freighted, so if an item is declared with no shipping cost they will calculate their own shipping cost from the country of origin and add that to the total.

You weigh up what risk you want to take and what's valuable to you, and pick accordingly. But this is still a valid deal imo.

I can see the same phone listed under flash deals in AliExpress for 410NZD. There is a store coupon for 5NZD too. Now that is very close to sub 400NZD mark where customs don't charge import duty.

      • My experience is that Aliexpress sellers often under declare anyway, thanks China! :)

But if they do charge you…

      Date: 13 June 2019
      Item 1
      Computers
      Original value
      410.00 NZD
      NZ Value @1 exchange rate
      410.00 NZD
      Duty @0.00
      0.00 NZD
      GST @15%
      61.50 NZD
      Item duty
      61.50 NZD
      Freight
      0.00 NZD
      GST on freight
      0.00 NZD
      Sub total
      61.50 NZD
      Entry fees
      52.67 NZD
      Total to pay
      $114.17

so possibly better off buying local + having warranty
