Asus routers are brilliant. I run Merlin on my RT-AC5300, and it has all the features you'd ever want. A much better upgrade than any free router your ISP gives you. Hardware specs matter.

  • You probably need a travel adapter for the plug. Voltage should be compatible though.

  • Amateur question but will this be suitable for a fibre connection?

    • +3

No, that's a good question, for ASUS, you just need to set the VLAN Tagging to 10 or in ASUS's case VID to 10.

Only required if your fibre provider used VLAN tagging. Not all do. E.g. MyRepublic doesn't.

        See for more https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=174…

        • Hat off to you, good find!

      • apparently you can request for vlan tagging to be turned off through the isp too (eg spark). they can submit the request to chorus but I havnt done tried to do this before.

    • I have the AC88U and it works on fiber (I'm with TrustPower).

To be honest, I wouldn't recommend the 86U at this price. You can get a 2nd hand 88U (much better) at around this price on Ebay or elsewhere. Yes it's 2nd hand, but it doesn't really matter. 88U has much better performance and I recommend using Merlin's custom firmware (real easy to install too).

Omg how many can I resell on trade me?

    • None, coz they are not made for NZ or Au market. They are electrically unsafe, or they say so. Lol

  • Thanks, I bought one. Hope it works with my Bigpipe Fibre.

  • It appears they have extended the "flash sale" for another 5 days.

  • They extended the sale again by a day or so. I bought one. Never bought from joybuy before, hopefully there won't be any order/shipping problems

  • Anyone received yet? What sort of plug does the power adapter have and what’s the voltage?
Sometimes you get power adapter with different country attachments, so just wondering if this one comes with that.

    • I think mine was sent to the wrong Zealand, as the shipping reports it going from China to Belgium… (Zeeland is just over the Belgium/Netherlands border)

      • Turns out it was just shipped via Belgium for some reason. Good way to double your shipping costs…

    • Mine arrived today. Power adapter is the US type, and accepts 100-240V. No adapters for other countries.

  • How does it compare to 68U. Any features 68U has this one doesnt? Merlin? AiMesh?
