It's a great time to be a Sam. Not only is Sam (and its many variations) the most common name on Uber right now - we're also giving Sams in New Zealand a free ride a day from 3-9 July 2017

Terms and conditions:
Sams will get a free ride a day up to $20 from 3-9 July 2017. Must register and sign up as a rider with Uber in NZ by 30 June 2017 to be eligible. 18+ only. Excludes UberEats. To register you must provide your first name, last name, email address and a New Zealand phone number. Uber will verify that the first three letters of your first name start with S.A.M. Once Uber verifies that the first three letters of your first name start with S.A.M you will be sent a confirmation email and your free rides will be automatically added to your rider account. The credit can only be applied to one account per rider.

Referral: random (5)

Referee: 50% off (up to $15) on five trips completed within 90 days.
Referrer: 50% off (up to $15) on their next Uber ride completed within 30 days of their referee/invitee completing their first trip.

      Possibly if they promoted "We aren't accepting any customers except people named Sam", but not in any way by what they are doing here.
