Age of Empires 2 HD Edition on Steam $3.59 NZD (Was $23.99 NZD)

120

Age of Empires 2.

One of my favourite games of all time. I recently found out there is HD remade version. Exact same game as the original, but it just supports the new resolutions of today. Very awesome game to play on those $200 11.6" laptops that pop up all the time. Basically you can run this game on a potato!

I bought it a while ago for $20.00 and it has been one of my favourite games to play on my microsoft surface. Very excited to see it for $3.00, because it means the wife's steam account is now going to get it as well!!

Cheers, does this one have LAN mode?

    • No idea, just had a sick look at the website and found this review:

This game is just as good as the original CD version. It is only missing LAN support. If you played this as a kid, do youself a favor and get this game and the expansions. It's lots of fun!

Although one comment on OzBargain says:

      thanks, great LAN game!

    • If you are interested I had a quick at the comments on OzB and it appears that it doesn't have a LAN mode though one commenter says:

The game secretly supports LAN. You use the internet to connect to your friend's lobby, then you can disconnect from the internet, and continue playing through your local LAN!

Cheers mate, yea, got it working, but the performance is unfortunately not as good as a LAN connection.

        • If you can disconnect from the internet (e.g. turn off your router) and still play, I don't see how performance can be any different for anything other than the part which requires internet (matchmaking?). It's possible it only switches to LAN after internet disconnects, but more likely the connection is always LAN only except for matchmaking part. (There's a very small chance it could end up going through the firewall/NAT router when normal LAN traffic doesn't but this is fairly unlikely given the way firewalls/NAT routers work. If they are intending to catch LAN traffic they generally always do, and if they don't they often don't at all.) It's possible performance is worse than the older version, could be any number of reasons for this.

        • @Nil Einne:

I'll test it later, but I suspect that it requires a consistent connection to the steam servers.

its multiplayer as per trailer. Should support LAN play if all are connected to internet.

Heaps of teams with the expansions too, really cool. The texture mods make it look heaps better as well. Add me on steam if you wanted to try an MP game at some point, shaw207.

This is my childhood. I don't own a PC, only a Mac. Managed to get it working on my MB Air using this tutorial
