Old Freeview Satellite Receiver

just wondering, does anyone have an old one of these lying around they wanted to get rid of?

Grandparents are reducing sky from 2 rooms to one, and the TV doesn't have anything inbuilt. I have got a crappy Digitview box here with no remote, and the Logitech Harmony I got them doesn't play well with it. Looking on Trademe, they are only around $25 anyway, but thought I'd ask.

  • Who watches sky these days buy yourself an android TV box and watch movies sports live TV for free plus you can play games too if you purchase a Bluetooth controller.

    • My grandparents wouldn't know what a game was if it hit them in the face, freeview will be good enough for them.

    • hey, please elaborate on that… or send me in the right direction on google.. thanks

  • To confirm its only a sky dish they have? Dvb-s or do they have a vhf aerial too?

I have an old dse box but perhaps they also have a dse one and the remote may be the same perhaps allowing you to train the Logitech remote?

Otherwise I may swap for some eneloops

    • They have the dish, it currently has a sky box, which is being decommissioned at the end of the month. I've been looking at DSE for a cheap box, so may actually wait until their stores get closer to closing. Not sure I'd part with Eneloops for one haha.

      • Going slightly off course here, but assuming they have a vhf aerial for dvbt, would it be worth just replacing the tv with one that has Freeview built in?

As it appears to be a secondary one and again assuming a smaller size, one could be had for very little 2nd hand, or relatively cheap brand new (veon).

Only mentioning this as I dislike satellite boxes and the tv must be 6+ years old and if anything like my grandparents, a 30kg crt.

        • The TV is a newish LCD, a Sony with a built in dvbt tuner, but no sat inbuilt. The only available connection is the the sat on the roof.

Replacing the TV wouldn't be a bad idea, but not really necessary given it is still all good.

Got rid of the old CRT junk years ago, my grandma even uses the Chromebook we got her, so not too far behind the times!

        • @Shaw: It's a bit late, but perhaps an indoor amplified aerial depending on how far your grandparents live from TV signal towers? They're 80% off at DS

        • @coolstorybro:

I tried a few indoor variants, but had no luck. Purchased a sat box now anyway, will wait for it to arrive and give it a shot. Cheers anyway mate.

  • Ended up buying a new box off AliExpress. $30 delivered, with a remote. Will see how that goes.

    • Arrived already, one week… Crazy. Had to add the Optus D1 config manually, but all up and running now.

      • Got a link? How is it? Hard to setup?

I've got to hand in my skybox this month and looking for a replacement satelite freeview box.

        • Got this one mate.

Pretty simple to setup, just need to learn the menus, but all in English, so that's a bonus. Can't remember the exact settings to add to find the Optus sat, but it's available online, and pretty easy to add from the correct menu.

As far as day to day use goes, my grandma uses it, and has not complained, so no issues there.

        • @Shaw:

          will reeview plus work?

        • @singh:

Not sure, don't think it was available through the sat receiver when I was setting it up, would have to play around with it. Ondemand wouldn't though, as it has no network interface.

        • @singh: No, all the Freeview Plus features require an internet connection, including the Freeview Plus guide.
