Where to Get Cheap Olive Oil

As title states - where do people get their olive oil in New Zealand? (Preferably Wellington, but open to other places)

Really looking at something at least 4-10 L in size. The 1L Olive Oil is usually $12-20+ at New World.

Looking for something similar to Lupo brand quality or better and am willing to buy in larger quantities.

Prefer to buy local Kiwi Olive Oil but am open to others if price is not comparable.

No blends, no extra virigin, just want 100% pure olive oil.

  • You do realise that extra virgin is the most pure you can get? The imported stuff is yellow. The NZ fresh stuff is green, but will be far more expensive. It is like comparing apples with oranges, as the taste is totally different. If doing cooking, I would use rice bran oil, as proper extra virgin olive oil isn't good for cooking, as it is more used for dressings or dips..

  • yes sorry, i meant i don't want extra virgin, i just want normal olive oil for cooking thats not so pricey.

I'll try rice bran oil, but would also like some cheapish olive oil to compare it to.

In Australia you could get olive oil 5L tins for like $12-18, but I've seen nothing like this here.

Olive oil is not the best for cooking anyway as it has a low smoke point and quickly goes rancid in storage. Much better options available, depending on the type of cooking.

There are any number of olive producers in many areas of NZ. GIYF Early harvest, first pressings generally give the most flavoursome peppery oils. But NZ olive oil is usually quite expensive for not the greatest quality of oil. We don't really have the best tree cultivars well established in NZ yet.

For quality imported oil, find a good Italian or European food wholesalers. In Christchurch, Mediterranean Foods is one of the best for quality and diversity. (Amazing balsamic vinegars as well!)
