Free App to Find Quick Sale Stickers near You (Save Money + Less Food Waste)

100

Kia ora all,

Like a lot of people, I've been feeling the cost of living. One thing that helps is quick sale stickers: meat, bread, dairy and ready meals marked down because they're close to their date. The problem is you only find them by luck.

So I built QuickSale: https://quick-sale.pages.dev

How it works
  • When you spot a quick sale sticker, snap a photo. The app reads the sticker and fills in the item and price for you.
  • Everyone nearby sees it on a map straight away, with how much it saves and how long ago it was spotted.
  • If you go and it's still there (or gone), tap a button so the next person knows.
  • Save the stores you shop at and get a notification when someone spots something there.
Why
  • Saving money. Scotch fillet marked down from $29.90 to $17.90 is $12 back in your pocket, and that adds up over the weekly shop.
  • Less food waste. Every marked-down item that gets bought is one less thing in the bin. Quick sales exist because the store would rather sell it cheap than throw it out, so let's help them find homes.
The details
  • Free, no account, no ads. Works in your phone browser, and you can add it to your home screen.
  • It's an independent community project, not linked to any supermarket. Full disclosure: I'm the person who built it.
  • Store data covers Auckland for now. Other regions can be added if there's interest.
  • English, 中文 and te reo Māori.

It's only useful if people post, so it'll be quiet at first. If you're in the supermarket and see a sticker, a quick snap helps everyone around you.

Feedback, bugs and ideas very welcome, here or via the report button in the app. Hope it helps someone stretch the budget a bit further. 🙏

  • So its similar to Gaspy, but for grocery. I like it.

  • Grocer and Growsav very similar products, but they're targeted down to the item name. This is more open and opportunistic and could make you spend more.

Not doubting the product, but the target in this economy could cause problems.

People spend more and have to travel further afield to get these specials, whereas if they're just looking at specific products, this could actually be bad for them.
