Hainan Airlines has Auckland to Hong Kong from about $1,130 return, with two checked bags, for trips leaving 3 or 10 March. Most other Wednesday, Friday and Sunday departures from 24 February to 12 March are about $1,240 to $1,250. It's one stop in Haikou each way, on one ticket, about 16 hours each way. Google Flights says it's about $370 under the usual price.

Wednesday flights leave Auckland at 9:30pm and land in Hong Kong at 9:10am, with 3h35 in Haikou. Home they leave Hong Kong at 9:35pm and land in Auckland at 6:40pm the next day. Outside these dates it gets a lot dearer: 17 February was $1,523 and 17 March $1,521.
Catches
- Haikou is a short stop in the small hours: you land at 4:10am going out, and at 11:10pm coming home.
- Changes cost a fee and the fare is only partly refundable.
- The cheapest prices come from online travel agencies. Compare with Hainan's own site before you book.
