Data Plan for a Temp Security Camera

Looking for recommendations for a temporary security camera setup. We need to keep an eye on our parents home for a few weeks and would like something with remote access.

They currently do not have Internet at home as already moved to rest home.

Ideally after a reliable 4G camera and a flexible SIM/data option, as I don’t want to be locked into a fixed plan for a year.

Any suggestions?

  • Get a cheap Android phone, ideally around the $100~$200 area. Install the Security Camera CZ app, it's a free Android app and you don't need to pay for the pro plan. On your own phone, install the app as well, which acts as a client for remote viewing access. Then put a SIM card with a Mighty Mobile or Kogan plan on it (maybe a monthly plan for now) and voila, you can now remotely access the phone via the app.

The app supports saving video recordings to your Google Drive for free. You can configure motion detection and sensitivity settings as well.

Alternatively, get a SIM router (maybe a TPLink Deco X80 5G) for about $80~$100 used on Trademe. Insert the SIM card into it, set it up. Then, get any typical security camera and just connect it to the router's wifi network. You can then remotely access the camera like normal. Maybe a TPLink Tapo or Eufy cam or something, either of those allows you to remotely access the camera from your phone.

  • I used a 2degrees prepaid simcard, a 5g modem router and tapo cameras to monitor my empty home for 3 months. Also bought lightbulb bayonet style cameras which screw into the lightbulb slot.

I also paid some random guy on fb $10 a month to share 10gb of his 2degrees data with me.
