Sydney is one of the most popular routes out of New Zealand, and fares change constantly depending on the airline and travel dates. I pulled together
several NZ cities with direct or connecting flights to Sydney across various airlines so you can compare them all in one place. All prices below are return in NZD. Generally Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Virgin Australia (from Queenstown) or Qantas, but sometimes if you're lucky you might get Emirates too!

Summary:
Auckland - Sydney return (17 Oct 26 - 27 Feb 27) from $570 return
Christchurch - Sydney return (5 Nov 26 - 7 Apr 27) from $611 return
Dunedin - Sydney return (15 Sep 26 - 28 Jun 27) from $709 return
Hamilton - Sydney return (2 Feb 27 - 29 Jul 27) from $441 return
Queenstown - Sydney return (21 Dec 26 - 28 Jul 27) from $654 return
Wellington - Sydney return (2 May 27 - 14 Aug 27) from $474 return

  • Hey OP, planning a family trip to Japan (land in Tokyo?), April 10 to 26, 2027, ex Wellington. Two adults, one child, return. Only air nz direct right ? We would only travel on Singapore airlines Qantas, and Emirates really. Any hot tips on this flight path?

    • Fiji airlines is usually the cheapest but it's a pretty dirty airline and overall similar to air NZ level. Also Nadi is a very low tier airport. Did it once but wouldn't again and would pay more for Qantas which is most likely the cheapest of the ones you've listed. Of course flexibility and date of purchase dependent.

      • Dirty? We flew them to Nadi on our honeymoon and they were wonderful. Signed a card for us from all the crew and gave us champagne.

The airport tho, yeah… and you're right on Japan - Qantas or a Chinese airline.

        • Also worth noting that flying with the Chinese airlines, travel time can sometimes be 30+ hours. So probably not advisable if traveling with a small child

    • Yes, only AirNZ :/ All other carriers operating between New Zealand and Japan (such as Qantas, Jetstar, Singapore Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Southern, and Fiji Airways) involve at least one connection via Australia, Asia, or the Pacific Islands.

      • Thanks bros :)

  • Anything for Melbourne?

    • Working on it. Takes time for scripts to run :)
