Power Banks for Travel - Recommendations?

What are people using for power banks and recommend?

Doing some travel and would love to get something reliable, that lasts for charging (e.g. maybe can handle 2 or so phones throughout the day needing some juice). Would love it to be portable as well - we'll have backpacks with us pretty much at all times.

I've seen some that are the small plug connector to a phone like the below link, which look good for potential ease of using the device while it charges - but do they stay on, are they vulnerable to fall off and being small, do they have much capacity or longevity do you think?

Think about a magsafe type one - fiddling around with cables and loose battery packs whilst travelling can be difficult

I have both the smaller anker one 5000 and large 20k one. Both good for different reasons. Can use the phone while having the smaller one plugged in, then the big one when not using phone.

Just fyi after a recent trip overseas, when flying they must be kept on you, seat pocket or bag on floor (not in overhead locker), plus you're not allowed to charge your phone with it.

I hope you're aware that some airlines already limit the capacity and number of power banks you're allowed to take on board, so check your airline(s) before you buy anything for travel. You could be limited to one power bank up to 10,000 which you must carry on board, and none allowed at all in your checked suitcase.

Though - I'd recommend a larger version, you'd be surprised how much more battery you use when travelling, factoring in the unexpected.
I've often had issues with charging devices on planes with their in-seat power supplies, or extended layovers

Easy, you MUST get one with a CCC stamp on it if you're travelling within China, so add that as a requirement, the rest of the spec doesn't matter if that is missing.

If you are looking at Noel Leeming make sure you apply a CSC membership to the pricing. For Powerbanks the CSC Premium is generally the better discount than CSC Main for most items.

Oh that is good to know! Does that apply if we're transiting through? We have the long layovers where an airline hotel is provided so will be going there and back to the airport on their shuttles

  @savvyspender: Hard to say, but probably not worth the risk if you're buying a valuable one. 100% for domestic flights (we had some taken off us that we, thankfully, got on clearance), maybe trains, they will need to have the CCC stamp, and for international it may depend on the agent on the day or the law at that particular time.

  @savvyspender: not a issue with international flights. for domestic they are very strict though. ive done a hotel stay with china southern and was ok with my non-CCC one.

I have an older version of the Snap Wireless, but they have an even newer model which looks awesome super convenient, built in cables, travel adapters, and you can charge both the power bank and your phone overnight by plugging in together. sadly sold out at the moment though.

  This looks great, a bit of cost but theoretically has everything in one! Reviews online seem a bit mixed on the quality and the cables being a failure point which worries me slightly… but you've had a good and reliable experience with it?

No need to buy the most expensive ones, btw.

I personally have their Redmi one (20000 mah) which now costs 59 bucks. No issues at all, works well enough for me, tbh.

But:
It's heavy and demands smth around 4 - 5 hours until fully charged.

The other comments cover it pretty well – make sure it has the CCC marking on it if transiting through China, and you'll be asked to separate it when going through security for inspection. I'd personally recommend making sure to get one with an integrated cable, as this can make life much easier when on the go. I'd personally recommend 10000mAh as a starting minimum for a "main" powerbank, especially as when it's particularly hot/cold capacity can be smaller than you'd think – even more so if charging multiple devices. Travelling Europe a couple months ago during various heatwaves was a particular challenge, even with latest gen phones + this powerbank.

If you are able to source from Taobao or similar, I'd recommend considering that. They pretty much all come with CCC cert. by default – I picked up a 10000mAh/37Wh UGREEN PB526 for ~12 NZD from the official UGREEN store.

I have 10000 MI powerbank & QI 2.1 wireless Magsafe powerbank 5000mah from aliexpress, which is more than enough for me. Not been to china or anything like that strict. But have taken them on plane without any issues. I really like the magsafe one for iphone very convenient and easily fit in the pocket without any wires.
