Uber charged me NZD $9.99 even though I’m on a $3 promotional plan — has anyone experienced this?

I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar with Uber.

I currently have only one Uber account, and on an Uber One promotional plan of NZD $3 for 3 months. Uber Support has already confirmed that this promotional plan is active on my account. However, I was recently charged NZD $9.99 by Uber through Apple Pay.

The strange thing is that my previous Uber One charge was NZD $3, and this new $9.99 charge occurred exactly one month later.
So it looks very much like I’m being charged NZD $9.99 monthly, despite being on the confirmed $3-for-3-months promotional plan.

I contacted Uber Support, but they told me they cannot locate this NZD $9.99 transaction in my Uber account, so they cannot explain what the charge is or issue a refund. They suggested that because I paid through Apple Pay, the transaction may use a unique payment token, which could make it difficult for them to identify the payment from the card details. However, I find this explanation difficult to understand because I already provided the last four digits of the virtual card number used by Apple Pay, specifically so Uber can use those details to match and identify the transaction.

Also, the fact that the $9.99 charge happened exactly one month after the previous $3 charge makes it seem very likely that this is related to the same account.

So, my questions are:

  • Has anyone else experienced Uber charging $9.99 through Apple Pay while Uber Support says they cannot find the transaction in the account?
  • And has anyone had a situation user provided the virtual card number/last four digits to Uber, but Uber still could not identify the transaction?
  • If you have experienced something similar, how did you resolve it?
  • Did you manage to get Uber to locate the transaction, or did you eventually have to contact your bank and dispute the charge?

I’m especially interested in understanding how Uber can successfully charge the payment method, while at the same time saying that they cannot find the transaction in their own system. If I can’t find the root reason I am afraid they will continue to charge me even I cancel my current $3 plan.

  • I haven't experienced Uber any amount through Apple Pay while Uber Support says they cannot find the transaction in the account, but then I would advise that you NEVER pay Uber via Apple Pay (or Google Pay etc) as it significantly muddies the waters if there are issues.

I would only ever let Uber charge something like a Wise Virtual Card as that gives you real control in a way that Apple won't give you.

No help in your current fight with Uber (or more properly, I would say, your fight is with Apple as it sounds like they are the ones that have charged you the $9.99), but hopefully helps for the future being less hassle.
