These Bali fares are spread across six carriers, so which one you end up on depends on the date and the departure city you pick.
Jetstar is the Qantas Group's low-cost arm and a mainstay of Australian and New Zealand sale fares, flying domestic routes in both countries plus the Trans-Tasman, the Pacific and selected Asian destinations. It isn't in a global alliance, but Qantas Frequent Flyer earning is available on eligible fares and add-ons. Being low-cost, expect bags, seat selection and food to be extras rather than inclusions - see our Jetstar airline guide.
Qantas is Australia's flag carrier and a founding oneworld member, with partnerships including Emirates, American Airlines, China Eastern and IndiGo. Its network covers Australian domestic routes plus New Zealand, Asia, North America, Europe, Africa and the Pacific, and as a full-service airline checked baggage, meals and inflight entertainment are included. More on our Qantas airline guide.
Air New Zealand is the local flag carrier and a Star Alliance member, working closely with Singapore Airlines and holding partnerships across Australia, North America and Asia. It flies New Zealand domestic, Australia, the Pacific Islands, North America and key Asian destinations, and is the most likely carrier for the New Zealand leg out of the smaller airports. Details on our Air New Zealand airline guide.
Batik Air is a full-service airline in the Lion Air Group with a growing Indonesia and regional network, flying Australia to Bali and Indonesia with onward services across Indonesia and Southeast Asia. It isn't in a global alliance and is connected commercially with the Lion Air Group network. See our Batik Air airline guide.
AirAsia is a low-cost group with a large network centred on Kuala Lumpur, flying Australia and New Zealand to Kuala Lumpur, Bali and Southeast Asia with onward connections across Asia. It isn't in a global alliance, connecting instead across the AirAsia Group network and through selected interline partners. Full details on our AirAsia airline guide.
Virgin Australia is a full-service Australian airline focused on domestic travel and short-haul international services, covering Australian domestic routes, New Zealand, the Pacific and selected international destinations. Velocity partners include Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and United. More on our Virgin Australia airline guide.
Connection Information
None of the six airlines on these fares fly New Zealand to Denpasar nonstop, so every itinerary involves at least one connection - most commonly an Australian city such as through Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or Brisbane. on the Trans-Tasman leg, or Kuala Lumpur (KUL) if your booking routes through the AirAsia network. Because the transit point varies by date and airline, check the actual airport on your own itinerary against the published minimum connection time at minimumconnectiontime.com before you book. That matters most on the tighter layovers, and it matters more again if the two legs sit on separate tickets - in that case a missed onward flight is your problem rather than the airline's.
About Bali
Bali is the one Indonesian island most New Zealanders already have a mental picture of, and the picture holds up. Ubud, inland and uphill, is the cultural centre - the Tegallalang rice terraces, the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, and a long run of temples including Tirta Empul and the cliff-cut Goa Gajah. The south coast is where the beach towns are: Seminyak and Canggu for surf breaks and beach clubs, Uluwatu for dramatic limestone cliffs and the sea temple of Pura Luhur Uluwatu, and Sanur for calmer water. Further out, Mount Batur is the standard sunrise trek, and the Subak irrigation system - a thousand-year-old cooperative water-sharing network still in daily use - is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dry season runs roughly May to October, which is the more reliable weather but also the busier and pricier half of the year; most of the fares below sit on the other side of that, in the wet season, when afternoon downpours are common but usually short and the island is noticeably quieter. The Fares
Hamilton is the surprise winner here, from $907 return on 2 February to 27 February, and it isn't a one-off - 12 of Hamilton's 25 available dates come in under $1,000, with $911, $914, $920 and $924 all clustered through February. If you can get to Hamilton Airport, it is comfortably the cheapest way out of New Zealand in this batch.
Christchurch is next from $965 return on 12 May to 19 May, with 12 of its 70 dates under $1,000. The cheap Christchurch fares sit later in the window than everyone else's - late April through May rather than February - so it is worth scanning both halves of that table.
Dunedin gets to $982 return on 28 January to 22 February, and $983 on 25 February to 22 March, but the field is thin: those are the only two sub-$1,000 fares out of 26 dates, and the next cheapest jumps to $1,026. Dunedin is either very good value or fairly ordinary depending entirely on whether those two windows suit you.
Auckland has by far the most choice, from $1,018 return on 13 February to 26 February, across 112 dates spanning 25 October 2026 to 22 June 2027. Nothing dips under $1,000, but the spread is tight - the bulk of the table sits in the $1,030 to $1,110 band, so there is almost always a workable date within a few dollars of the headline fare.
Queenstown starts at $1,025 return on 19 February to 16 March, with 69 dates and a similarly tight spread topping out at $1,126. Wellington is the dearest of the six, from $1,039 return on 13 February to 20 February, and it has the narrowest travel window too - it closes on 18 March 2027, where Christchurch runs all the way through to 23 June 2027.
February is the sweet spot for four of the six cities, which lines up with the quieter, wetter end of the Balinese calendar. If you would rather have dry-season weather, the May and early June dates at the back of the Christchurch, Auckland and Queenstown tables are the ones to look at.
