AT HOP Cards - Low Balance

Not a very eco-friendly tip, but if you’ve got any spare cards lying around it’s a good way to use them up.

AT HOP cards will let you tag on if they have a positive balance. If your trip is greater than the cost of a $5 card, it can be cheaper to discard it after your trip and get a new one.

  • So basically, don't tag off and spend that charge equivalent of the fare, on the new card?

What does happen if you do (try to) tag off, and the trip fare is greater than your balance?

Also, aren't the cards registered to you, so when you get a new card, couldn't they transfer over the deficit from the old one?

      • Tag on - it’ll put you into a negative balance, when you tag off it tells you you’ve got nothing left.

Registering a card is optional - but no, they don’t transfer negative balance from one to another.

        • Cool - thanks!

  • Buying a new card must cost something? How's that sustainable?

    • Buying a new card costs $5, a ferry to hobsonville is around $10 - so this gives it to you at half price
