Washer / Dryer Combo - any thoughts?

Hey all,

I'm wondering what others experience is with Washer / Dryer combo (e.g. single integrated machine) generally.

We have a separate washer machine and drying machine at another premise, but looking at the combination option to save on space at our primary residence.

In the past, the combination washer/dryers weren't reviewed well, but given improvement in tech, it looks like this is no longer the case?

We are price/value conscious and the Haier 600 Series 12kg + 8kg Front Loader Washing Machine & Dryer Combo (HWD1280PXB1) on sale at H&N looked particularly appealing.

Before impulse buying I thought it reasonable to get other peoples opinion on recent washer/dryer combination experience.

Thanks,

L

  • If there is enough room, I always go for separates as more expensive to fix if it is the combo. Also, I can do another washing load while the other is already drying. When I was living in an apartment, I had no choice but to go combo due to the limited space.

  • Chatting with a repair agent recently he said that in his opinion, too much stuff is being crammed into the small space for these things, meaning repair costs are increasing, and durability over the lifetime is suffering too. His recommendation was to keep things simple - eg we still have just a standard old school tumble dryer and he was raving about it saying they are the best. Simple and functional. His recommendation was across the board too - ovens, fridges, washers. Don't look for technical solutions for a simple task (eg LCD panels regularily fail, when in the past a simple rotary switch would go for decades).
Another factor is the speed at which these combined units complete their purpose is (usually) extended too; so where a basic dryer may complete its cycle in 45 min, a combination unit may still be going 90 min later. Hypothetical times, but check it out when evaluating products.
So I would say unless you really need to condense (punn intended) the functionality into a single unit size (eg some apartment living requires it), then do yourself a favor and don't.
