Good price on the chicken breast (and butter!)

Tegal Takeouts are a rip-off full stop - better to make yourself from the chicken breasts, but I guess if you're flush, then fair enough.

      Agree.
The chicken breast is a good price.
The second deal is actually the Tegel Free Range Burgers, Tenders, Steaks, Bites rather than the Take-Outs I had originally posted. I made an error in that one so I've updated the post.

    • Convenience costs money too and for some it's worth it.

Sometimes its just easier to chuck a few in the airfryer for 15min and be happy with that.

Yep - we do that too.

Sometimes we coat them in breadcrumbs, but most often just the plain chicken breast (preferably skin-on for more flavour), and maybe with paprika and / or other seasoning sprinkled on top (re-applied when we turn over) and cut into whatever size works best for each family member.

They come out very moist compared to doing the same in a normal oven - hardly ever use that since we got the airfryer.

I looked at those once and they were like 60% chicken then second ingredient was water.

Clicking through to the link there's more water than flour and I don't understand what the water is doing there other than boosting the weight, when you make a crumb or a coating, there's more solid (like flour) than water.

Not to mention those "steaks" are 30% coating, which seems unreasonably high if they're a coated chunk of chicken.

Paying a premium for a lot of water.

      • Mate, plain uncooked chicken breast is already 70% water, they just don't have to put that on the packaging.

Water in the ingredients list is ADDED water.

If the ingredients says Chicken 60%, Water 40% then that means 82% water if you're counting the 70% in the chicken already.

So you're paying $10/kg for 600g of chicken (that's 70% water), then $10/kg for another 400g of water.

    • Agree on takeouts on overpriced. Only buy when on sale.

    • agree Tegal Takeouts - high fat content and taste meh
Waitoa Free Range Chicken Tenders on the other hand are great

  • We love you bigcheese 👏👏👏

  • I have heard that Mad Butcher is / will be doing Chicken Breasts for $7.99 per kg this week - I haven't had time to check if it is up on their website and see if it is all, or some, or just one store, and if so, which one(s), but anyone thinking of stocking up might want to check that out first.

Apologies if I have it wrong - it is hearsay!

    • Got the email from them, boneless skinless chicken breasts for $10.99 and skin-on for $9.99.

Cool - thaks for the correction.

I always buy skin-on if possible - gives you the choice at the time of use, and it takes ten seconds to remove the skin if you want to do that.

        • So it looks like, in Auckland at least:

Glen Innes = $9.99 per kg
Mt Roskill = $9.99 per kg
          Takanini = $7.99 per kg
          Pukekohe = $9.99 per kg

I haven't checked elsewhere, but if you are signed up for the mailer from only one store, you might want to still check others that are within your normal travel area, as another $2 per kg could be quite a bit if you stock up enough.

        • How are you removing the skin so quickly? Are you a Rabbi?

How are you removing the skin so quickly? Are you a Rabbi?

Snip snip with scissors - pretty easy. You can also use a sharp knife.

Having said that, I think its pretty universally agreed that skin-on is best :-)

  • I've finally moved to buying whole chickens and cutting them up. Its working out a lot cheaper.

    • yeah especially when Pak n Save sell 850g frozen chooks for $5. Can get a couple of lunches sorted with them.

      • Just go to New World late at night a few times and accumulate some of those free vouchers!

        • -1

Just get your other half to go in first and fill their trolley with what's left. Then put them back once you have your voucher.

          • @Jizah: How does that work?

            • @cheekiecheapo: Person 1 goes in and empties the hot chicken cabinet.

You go in and tell the staff there's no hot chickens left and they should give you a voucher

            • @cheekiecheapo: Yeah what Stoic said. But I was joking, don't do this.

There are quite a few people on this site who don't really get classic Kiwi humour very well. Hence you have been downvoted above.

Honestly, it's their problem, not yours.

No harm in waiting to see, but I had a look, but NW didn't even come close to the chicken breast at $7.99 per kg deal, so I stopped in and picked up a load at that price today.
