  • With price of Jetfuel Buy the ticket then ask China Southern if they want to pay you not to fly for an extra 100 haha

Chinese airlines need to generate cashflow to service their (very high) debts to local government in China. Even though they're losing money on each flight, the activity generates revenue which allows them, in the short term, to make payments.
They also have 'use it or lose it' flight slots at various airports, so if they cancel too many flights they won't be able to easily recover in the future.
On top of this, they need to save face by staying active during the current economic crisis in China - airlines are a prestige business for the country.

You have some interesting points but it might not hold up to scrutiny.
Most likely reason is that they are moving eyeballs with such loss leading prices with only handful of flights at this price and it’s mainly to china(so some tourism boost).

I always thought the majority of Chinese airlines are partially/entirely state-owned and have these subsidised fares to attract more foreign tourists.

better than having an airline who keeps getting bailed out and charging ridiculous fares.

            @huffboy: like Airnz? lmao

            • @pacman04: maybe… let just say… flights from auckland to wellington are as expensive as this deal. 600km vs 10000km

Looking at the fares ex-NZ/AU vs the rest of their network, coupled with the increase in flights/larger aircraft where there is not necessarily passenger demand, my deduction is their cargo belly is full and they would fly anyway, so an extra $500/seat is $500 more than than an empty seat

        • Makes sense, and a lot of these china routes are still one airline one route. Like Hainan Airlines - Hainan Route, China Southern - Guangzhou Route, Air China - Beijing Route, China Eastern - Shanghai etc

You mentioned about Beijing return Flight, the hyperlink doesn’t work, can you share the dates? @beatthatflight

  • Are all the dates 1 ticket only? Or have they just sold most of them?

    • From my testing it does appear the flights are only one ticket per return date pair.

I was able to snag some flights for $480 + $72 CFAR (cancel for any reason) via trip.com

      Expedia gave me an error.

      • what is CFAR?

        • +1

Cancel For Any Reason - they put it in brackets beside the acronym

  • Thanks! This was one of the ones I purchased the other day. Booked w Amex to get travel insurance perk.

  • Awesome, thanks!
Don't want to be annoying, but are there any good deals to San Francisco from Auckland right now? I had "booked" one with a local travel agency for the 20th of March a couple of days ago, but now he's coming up with random excuses… Long story.

    • Fiji Airways is on sales now! 1500+ return to Cali or Tokyo in the Christmas Period!!!! Ending 17th March!
