  • With price of Jetfuel Buy the ticket then ask China Southern if they want to pay you not to fly for an extra 100 haha

    • +1

Chinese airlines need to generate cashflow to service their (very high) debts to local government in China. Even though they're losing money on each flight, the activity generates revenue which allows them, in the short term, to make payments.
They also have 'use it or lose it' flight slots at various airports, so if they cancel too many flights they won't be able to easily recover in the future.
On top of this, they need to save face by staying active during the current economic crisis in China - airlines are a prestige business for the country.

      • You have some interesting points but it might not hold up to scrutiny.
Most likely reason is that they are moving eyeballs with such loss leading prices with only handful of flights at this price and it’s mainly to china(so some tourism boost).

      • I always thought the majority of Chinese airlines are partially/entirely state-owned and have these subsidised fares to attract more foreign tourists.
