Synlait have imported a load of butter from the US, and are selling it via PNS at a good price ($6.19 is the lowest I have found at Papakura), but $6.99 at other PNS stores

There were discussions on reddit about this, apparently USA butter is terrible.

No idea - I just saw the deal, and figured it would be a good price for some people.

Kiwi's do have a tendancy to be very parochial though, so the commentary is not really unexpected in general. People will complain that Fonterra is ripping them off in one breath, then slag-off someone that tries to give them another option.

I guess it's not really surprising that there is so little competition in our grocery market if that's the reaction.

    • I guess that might have something to do with what dairy cows in America are fed, I don't know though I'm no scientist, but I did a quick Google search for what milking cows in America eat and this came up from some US government site. It's from 2019 but I can't imagine too much has changed since then.

Dairy Cow Diet Composition (2019 data): 39% corn, 16% dried distillers grains (DDGs), 13% soybean products, and 32% other feedstuffs, including hay/silage
      https://www.ars.usda.gov/ARSUserFiles/50901500/px-based_v3.2…

Compare those figures to NZ dairy cows diets and according to Fonterra our dairy cows on average are 96% grass fed, so while NZ butter may not necessarily taste better or worse than American butter I'd imagine there'd be at least some difference in taste between the two.

Also if you're into baking I think American butter has a slightly higher water content than NZ butter does, something to take into consideration if you're wanting to use it to make things like pastries.

$7.39 for 500g block of NZ Butter at our local. If our store sells this butter at $6.19 when it comes to the South Island I might grab one to try, but if it's $6.99 I think for 40c extra I'll stick with the one I know.

We are stocked up on the $4.50 butter from MilkRun a couple of weeks ago (eight blocks of 500g for $36 delivered if I recall correctly), so I won't be bothering myself, but worth trying something new?

You never know, you might like it as I always tell our kids!

I wonder if the US suppliers of butter and the NZ suppliers of butter high five each other as they pass each other going to the opposite side of the world from their home ports?
