  • Love your work - any way to link this through from Chch without a manual connection?

    • +1

Not that I'm aware unfortunately, in fact I believe you have to repeat check-in in Haikou as well.

Eg https://book.beatthatflight.com.au/?flightSearch=CHC2705HAN1… has Jetstar to AKL and then you connect manually. However, it is on the same ticket, so your credit card insurance / travel insurance should cover you if delayed, is my understanding.

Other option is a cheap return flight on JQ to Australia, and then a return ticket from that city (BNE/SYD/MEL etc) to Vietnam, but most of them go to SGN (Ho Chi Minh) rather than HAN unfortunately. This was just one of those deals that caught my eye today :/

  • Thanks for posting.

What do you think the chance of cheap CHCH to Japan (Osaka or Tokyo) coming up wil be given that Chinese visitors to Japan seem to be well down?

Looking for about 15 days, ideally with one week in the NZ school Holidays (x2).

I did find one that was Air Fiji (a stopover of 2 days or so would also be cool) using your site that was apparently operated by JetStar(and sent me to a US based travel booking place), but can't find anything close (or at all on Air Fiji) directly on the Jetstar (week of June, week of July in that search).

Alt. How likely that we see sub $1000 China or Korea returns?

And FYI - the new(ish?) search page takes up half my phone screen with the search box - kinda annoying)

there's definitely sub 1k to China and Seoul when I last checked.

Do you mean the search box that loads at the top of the deal page, or the search results page box? It's less than a month old so happy to take feedback.

The Japan fares are weird, China Southern is still selling fares there but I refuse to promote them until we can be sure they won't keep getting cancelled :/

      • Thanks.

The flights search box you first see. I suspect it's meant to collapse when you scroll down /start getting search results to just the main details, but shows the entire thing with all the search boxes so it's hard to see the results (esp if there is also a pop over footer advert).

I also can't get the cookies agree/disagree to stick (either). Though that might be my device settings.

    • I saw this

Also saw another for 2026 for 6K
is that a good deal ?

  • Any one has experience flying hainan airlines? And what would you do for 15 hrs layover in HAK airport?

    • +1

I've not flown them, but they were #10 rated airline last year: https://www.worldairlineawards.com/worlds-top-10-airlines-20…

    • +1

They are great to fly with for the price (good planes / food alright) but the HAK airport is boring - there is maccas on the non-security side /usual chinese food there and a few shops. we saved about 1k per person flying them vs Singapore/other airlines.

For 15 hours (and for HAINAN ,you will need to grab your bags … and re-checkin though. but there is luggage storage there)

maybe have a look around the place , we stayed in a hotel as jetlagged (was about $30 ).

  • Haikou Meilan International Airport provides transfer hotel accommodation and dining services to eligible passengers. Please check your information carefully and follow the instructions to complete your service.

  • Haikou is great. Take 2 or 3 days layover at haikou. Take bullet train from the airport to sanya. Ome of the best location to be with kids. They call it chinese hawaii. Personally i had a great time there. They also have atlantis which is cheap and amazing

  • Cheers OP. Got a return flight direct from the airline for $650. Goal of travelling to Vietnam this year achieved 🎉

15 hour layover on the way over so hopefully can squeeze in a bit of Haikou as only 3 hours on the return.

    • Hey, my hometown is Hanoi and I'm thinking of visit it for 2 weeks since the price is so attractive. I don't have any specific date in mind yet. I'm solo traveller. So if you don't mind someone to make company in 15 hours layover or chatting while waiting for the plane, we cheapies fan might catch up on the same trip. What do you think?

      • Sure thing if you're heading over (on the way back) on the same dates. I'll only be staying in Hanoi for a couple of nights before heading to Ha Giang.

        • Which company are you doing the loop with? Or are you renting a motorbike and doing it yourself?

          • @justaddwater: Haven't booked anything yet but i'm looking at 4d3n with Road Kings, but considered Flipside Adventures which is has Kiwi owners.

From there I'll rent a bike and head across to Cao Bang solo staying a few nights along the way then either decide to loop back to Ha Giang, or return the bike at Cao Bang there for a small extra fee.

If you're considering it, be aware NZ passports can't legally get a licence to use in Vietnam. Insurance would likely not cover this and Police will fine / be required to be bribed.

            • @MarkoBrolo: check with your provider.

there was a thread in reddit, some tourist got a police fine for staying overnight at cao bang without reporting to the local police first. something to do with restricted border town. ok during the stay but need police permission to stay the night, or something

you need international drivers license (motorbike endorsement) to legally rent a bike there right?

              • @justaddwater: Sure will.

Strange, I will look into that thanks.

The international driver's licence we get is not valid in Vietnam, but most places don't ask for it. The place I'm looking at renting from specifically states on their website that they don't check.

Saying that I will still get our version of the IDP, as something is better than nothing.

        • Thanks, I have just checked the price, it is already up. Too late :(
