    Garage Sale perhaps?

Pretty cheap (printing up some flyers plus the time to put them up, take them down, and your time to actually run the garage sale), but you'll get very little return I would think - effectively similar to FaceBook MarketPlace, but at least the tyre-kickers aren't taking up time you would otherwise be doing something else.

On the other hand, I imagine that a garage sale would be relatively easy and (if you're lucky) quick to shift a load of not so great stuff, and you could hold back anything that might go for a reasonable sum on TradeMe.

Caveat: I have never done a garage sale myself, so what would I know!?

List your things on Trade Me with no reserve and a starting price that is the minimum you want to sell it for + 10% on top to cover success and Ping fees, that way anything you get above that price is a bonus. Just make sure you have good photos and detailed descriptions of the goods you're selling. If you don't get any bites on your listings it could be because your prices are too high, search expired auctions to see what similar items have been selling for and adjust your prices accordingly. Sometimes when selling 2nd hand goods what we want for them and what people are willing to pay for them are 2 entirely different things, sometimes you just have to take the hit and sell it for less than you want.

I use Bidbud to monitor my auctions, I have them all set to Authenticated Members only to stop the new account time wasters, plus I have Bidbud notify me when anyone with Feedback below a certain % places a bid on one of my listings and I've had nothing but smooth sailing selling goods on Trade Me. Selling stuff isn't rocket science, if you set an asking price that people are willing to pay then your stuff will eventually sell.

    • thanks

    • Sadly Bidbud is no more - due to changes in the way TradeMe operates. Shame as Bidbud was excellent - I find TradeMe pretty limited in ways to personalise your searches and weed out unwanted buyers and sellers. Just thought I'd add my 10 cents to Flippant's pertinent and useful remarks.

  • Further to my earler message re Flippant's comments - I see Bidbud is back online (they've been off for a couple of days) but they are now more limited in their scope since the updates to TradeMe. Sorry if I confused anyone :-)

    • I use it daily. The site was down for a day or two a few months ago. Other than that, no issue. I use it mainly for viewing and searching.
