Contact Energy fixed term electricity plan?

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone are still on a fixed term plan with Contact or have recently signed up one?

I checked their website, all I can find is flexible open term plans. Reason I want a fixed term plan is to lock in the daily rate before it increases to $1.80 in April. Last year I was able to lock in with Mercury before April and was able to get 1.20 daily rate locked in (Mercury have since changed their fixed term t&c, there is no more lock in rate even if one signs up for a fixed term plan)

I'm keen to know if anyone is with Contact and on fixed term locked in rate.

  • Curious which power companies have a daily rate that low, ours is $1.725 before it goes up in April, we are with powershop, but contact is the same for the daily rate.

Actually not as low as you think. Mine is 1.20 and yours is 1.50 both before GST.

I didn't want to have the 30cents increment so I signed up a locked in rate before the increment in April last year.

So if you want to retain the 1.50 daily rate then need to find a plan that provides fixed term locked in rate before April. Mercury has changed their TnC, so no more fixed rate.

Curious, I also looked at several power company plans:

Genesis: only open term plan, $1.45 daily
Meridian: only open term plan, removed the fixed term plan $1.50 daily
Contact: open term plan, $1.50 daily

Looks like everyone is getting rid of their fixed term plan compared to when I looked last in November 2025

Yup that's what I noticed too. I remembered Contact has fixed term plan last year but it is gone. I really don't like to give them power to change my rates anytime they want (even with a 30days notice).

If you find something let me know.

      • Am in a similar situation with Mercury increasing their prices for the low user daily rate and per kWh from 5th March. Below is for a Wellington address excl GST:

Charge type Current Prices New Prices
        Daily Fixed Charge ($/day) $1.2000 $1.5000
        Inclusive ($/kWh) $0.2249 $0.2538

Bizzare! Given that the promise was for the fixed charge to increase but unit price to come down when the Govt announced the removal of low user rate.

Or, at least, that the rate of increase of unit prices would be mitigated compared to what it would otherwise have been.

            • @Alan6984: also this tax levy thing introduced.

              We're not.. well, sorted..

No, but I'm sure you're right - we are much better off than we would otherwise have been.

        • I am assuming your fixed term ends 5th March? I reckon they will increase your daily again to 1.80 in April.

  • Even with fixed term, they can now change the prices during term.
Mercury has 12 months fixed term, but prices can change.

    Offers
    1 year term
    $300 account credit
Terms, conditions and early termination fees apply.
Prices may change during the term.

    8 CHANGES TO PRICING
8.1 All pricing will be subject to change at any time during the Term. You will be given notice of any change in accordance with
Mercury’s General Terms and Conditions for Residential Customers.

Is the only benefit of a fixed term the credit you get?

      • I think so, $300 for fixed contract with them. But the unit charge kWh is also higher for the fixed term plan, so it depends on how much you use. If you use more than 350 units per month, you are better off with open term plan

I am guessing all the power companies have now put this clause in their terms, so they can update the low user day charge in April

          Makes sense - thanks!
