  • There should be free aborist mulch (ie. shredded trees) around if you don't mind the quality and quantity, usually delivered free too.

    • Yeah, that can be hit and miss, I guess it depends where you live. I tried several times to get various pages to drop off "free" mulch, and nobody ever got back to me, I think for obvious reasons they don't want to have to travel too far to dump it. Best bet I found was to actually talk to arborists who live or are working nearby and ask them if they would mind dumping a load at my place when they were done.

There's a big difference however between fresh mulch and aged mulch. The aged stuff is really nice, turned frequently so it's not all mouldy but that stuff can be quite expensive. So OP, in answer to your question it depends whether it's fresh or aged and also how far you are from them. Get a few quotes to be sure you're getting a good deal.

Sounds good, but how are you actually finding this when its on offer?

To state the obvious, we're only going to want this once in a blue moon, and arborists (presumably) want a consistent, and convenient way to get rid of the mulch.

I'm just not sure how to make this work in reality?

  • You can always get in contact with pallet companies, they will often give you enormous bags of pine chips/shavings for free as it’s a byproduct of the pallet making process. I’m talking hundred plus kilo bags

Are pallets made with treated timber?

If so, I guess it would depend on where we are putting the mulch down as to whether it would be okay or not?

      • You can always ask the supplier. A lot of timber is heat treated, not chemical treated, so is absolutely fine for the garden. My parents have been doing this for years, and as it drops down/decomposes just gets back in contact with the pallet company and then they go and pick it up on the trailer every few years.

Looked up the sacks, they’re FIBCSs (flexible intermediate bulk containers), and can hold up to 500kg at a time. Made of woven poly
