  • If these go via Guangzhou, are there cheaper flights avaliable to just go there instead?

      Oh you sweet, summer child.

Direct flights cost more than indirect flights because "(profanity) you, that's why".

It would probably be cheaper to fly to Guangzhou via Tokyo on a Blue Origin rocket, than to fly to Guangzhou via China Southern and stay there.

It spawned a whole concept of buying flights that pass through the place you want to go, then just not hopping on the next flight, and the airlines named it "Skip-lagging" and will now charge you a significant fee and/or refuse to seat your partial return flight.

If you want shortest distance flights, and convenience, then that costs big bucks.

Idk why you got downvotes, you're right.

Shruggie, maybe people really believe in airlines and think they're acting in the best interest of their passengers and they're not profit machines designing routes based on maximum revenue extraction and that they're dumb and make mistakes when crafting prices so that finding a cheap flight means you've outsmarted the airline.

Even cheap flights are the optimal configuration for maximum revenue.

Or maybe it's airline workers downvoting.

Airlines are like meat processing plants, if there's a way to extract revenue from something, they'll monetise it in ways you couldn't dream of. Everything but the oink.
