I'm sure it works for some people, but I'm reading online that duolingo isn't very good for speaking a language and rather it's just for learning some words. Can anyone tell if it's worth it, for learning to speak and converse in languages?

    • What language you want to learn?, i use it for german but thats very similar to English, i can understand and speak parts of it.
You use it as a starting block then learn how the language is understood.

      try the free version.

Duolingo won't help you become fluent in anything. I've found the flashcard style useful for picking up foreign alphabets and not much else.

This is a long read and it's targeted at Latinists, but it's applicable to any language, explains why Duolingo doesn't help, and details a method which does work:

TL;DR, Duolingo more or less just teaches you to translate sentences word by word. Fluent speakers just don't operate this way.

I've studied three languages at a tertiary level and have good friends who are language teachers and who I've talked to about this.

Duolingo is good for exposure and ease of use but it won't get you anywhere close to fluent on its own because it lacks instruction on the mechanics; how and why languages function. However, I think it can be a really good accessory to other programmes, and learning parts of another language is a much better use of time than doom scrolling.

      • I find it alright. I'm probably the most laziest language learner, but it keeps my Spanish progressing some what. People learn different ways.
