Ocean Signal RescueMe PLB1 (Personal Locator Beacon) $295.26 (C&C/ in-Store Only) @ Supercheap Auto

190

But niche, but on Clearance and then Boxing Day

Was $599, still 544.04 at Pb Tech.

7 year battery life, would recommend checking the date on the actual unit incase they are old stock.

Cost for battery replacement at Lusty & Blundell is $245 incl. GST plus freight with a minimum battery life of 6 years, so makes this a good deal for a whole new unit.

This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2025

This looks perfect for escaping a party I no longer want to be at.

The listing specifically states a 7 year battery life and doesn't mention anything about it being less due to age etc, so I'd argue that if you bought it and the battery life was not reasonably full (i.e. 5-6 years), they should be responsible for providing replacement with a full battery. It'd be unreasonable that they sell some with a full battery and some without and then just say "suck it up and deal with it".
The warranty on these is also 5 years, and warrantys include batteries, so a battery that isn't as listed would be covered.

Also not sure how to apply CSC to supercheap as it doesn't show as a discount on the CSC app? (Or is C&C not a typo, what is C&C?) And their website states this item cannot be shipped (likely due to the battery?) and doesn't give me an option for this either. You have to collect at a store with one in stock it seems.

      C&C = Click & Collect

      • ah yes of course, it did just click in my brain not long ago - but yeah, you can't ship this it seems, so C&C is the only option.

Excellent price for this PLB, I have one. I got mine shipped from Australia. So they can normally be freighted. You can do a satellite test on the unit to check battery and satellite connection but that does not check 24 hr strength of battery which is what the battery guarantee is for.

    • Just got mine, the battery's only good till Oct 2029, I suspect having the battery expiry printed on the box/item probably allows them to get around the 5 year warranty. Bit of a downer TBH.

      • I assume that the location you buy from may have an impact on how old the device is, with areas which sell more more likely to have newer stock with better batteries. Where did you pick up from? 2029 is just under 4 years, so technically that battery "fails" within the 5 year warranty period - having that printed doesn't void the warranty or anything of the such unless they've explicitly stated the conditions of sale, which I can't see they've done.
(There is nothing on the product listing that states or implies any condition differences to a normal sale, e.g. some sellers will say "clearance T&C apply", but I can't see any such mention of this, nor does Supercheap appear to have anything on their website about such conditions applying to different items)

I've ordered one but won't pick it up for a week or so. As I say, the product page states 7 year battery life, so if it's showing signs of not being full on purchase, then raise a warranty. Supercheap might just offer a refund instead of replacement/fix, as is their right, in which case I wonder if it's worth contacting Ocean Signal themselves to see if they will offer a solution.

I mean… maybe at the end of the day it's worth just keeping as is, then a year before the battery expiry raise a warranty and hopefully get a brand new one/new battery for free…

        • I picked it up from Wairau Park (Auckland). Going over the Ocean Signal warranty it looks like its only warrantied against defects in material or workmanship.

I'll probably hold onto it just because it basically like paying full price for a shorter lifespan then it'll be another $250 to get the battery changed but certainly far from the deal I was expecting to get.

          • @Grrizz: Batteries are covered as a manufacturers defect - the Ocean Signal warranty on their website is mostly non-specific generic warranty stuff that applies to the US/worldwide. And sales in NZ still need to comply with NZ laws and the consumer guarantees act, of which their are laws about selling products that do not match the product listing description.
There is no doubt in my mind that a product that states "7 year battery life" but arrives and further shows that the battery will expire within the manufacturers specified 5 year warranty period would be covered not only under their own warranty, but under the CGA. The problem is that Supercheap has the right to refund instead of replace, so you'd have to accept a fault product or refund - which is why it might be worth waiting until it's closer to the time and then raising a warranty.

Let's be real, if you bought it at full price and then 4 years later the battery needed replacing, you'd warranty it. It should be no different at this price unless they had specifically stated the battery as being a reason for the discounted price/specified different conditions for the discounted price. They haven't.

            • @chunder: Fingers crossed 🤞 I guess I'll find out in 4 years 😅

      • So the battery expiry date is printed on the box? I'm picking mine up on Sunday and was hoping I could check the expiry date without opening the box in case I wanted to return it.

        • +1

It is, the box isn't sealed either so you dont have to worry about opening either.

  • Just got mine, battery only good till Oct 2029 so half the price for half the battery…

    • Mines September 2031, sounds like I got lucky

      • Which store?

      • Very. Mar 2030 here

  • Trying to purchase online and it keeps returning me to the cart. Anyone else having issues?

    • Was trying Mt Wellington, wasn't working (I assume all stock was allocated). Messaged their online support who said their checkout has been having issues all day. Asked if I could be cheeky and ask for a bit of credit due to the annoyance - they gave me $10 😂

Have to go out to puke now… Guess that'll help with fuel..

  • So how do you know if the battery fails/is failing within the warranty period? You're going down in your boat and it fails to work 😫 or is there a low battery warning?

    • They have a date printed on the device that it is certified to work until (aka provide 24hrs of transmission when activated, after activation the battery should be replaced), but they also have a test for the battery which is recommended to be carried out every month that tells you how long its been activated for (if more than 1 hour its recommended to have the battery changed), and a test for the GPS/radio which is recommended to be carried out once a year (due to the increased battery use).
