"Cashing Out" Prezzy Card

It's that time of year where people are getting gifted prezzy cards.

I prefer to "cash out" mine, before I lose it or I forget about it and it expires.
The best method I have used to date is setting up an additional PayPal account and paying myself (for a small fee).

I have read of people in the past, registering the card and adding to google wallet then topping up their wise (small fee) or Revolut account (no fee). I haven't had any luck with Revolut and haven't tried Wise.

Any other suggestions out there?

Just pop to the supermarket with it?

    • I've done this before also, and just transferred the amount I spent into savings.

    • Just pop to the supermarket with it?

That's what I almost always do - it converts to cash (effectively), and I don't think there is any loss in terms of fees, at least that I can recall.

      • Sorry slow day - how does this method at the supermarket work?

Just buy your groceries with it that you would have to buy anyway, then the real money you didnt spend on groceries you can use anywhere or transfer to savings as it has no limits or expiry date.

  • I pretty much just spend it on whatever the next purchase is. Sure it loses the sense of this person bought me this thing you get paying for something with it, but I'd rather have $100 off grocery shopping than forget about it. If I get one I do hold on to it if it has almost no value, they are quite handy to use as trial credit cards that will bounce the payment of you forget to cancel.

    • I used to do that too back in the day, but now I just a Wise virtual card.

Still, it definitely works as you say :-)

      • With google shutting down digital tourism i can go back to that route. I accidentally got stuck with my virtual cards being tied to google regions and didnt dare cancel it in case I couldn't resubscribe.

  • I use it to add to my contact energy account balance, there is a 0.85% surcharge so $100 will give you $99.14

    • If you're using it to pay utilities, you might as well use it to pay for groceries which has no surcharge at all. Plus you buy groceries more often than paying for power so it's a faster conversion too.

      • I can top up my account anytime not only when I have a bill to pay, with the prepaid card scams going on I would use the balance asap.

  • Revolute used to accept prezzy card topup via pre-added applepay. But not anymore
