Has this got fluoride in it?

    • +4

No, and it should have a warning on it that it's going to do jack all.
On their website, they can only make fluffy claims like "designed to support oral hygiene".

It's a freebie. With free shipping. You don't gotta order it if you don't want it. Let us have the free samples lol

"You don't gotta order it if you don't want it."
I'm not; I was answering a question and warning them. I've had friends who have ruined their teeth because their parents made them use fluoride-free toothpaste.

"Let us have the free samples"
It might make a good general cleaner. There are plenty of toothpaste "hacks".

@Danielryan: Absolutely, most knowledgeable humans use fluoride paste. I do myself. Heck even the waters fluoridated. But chucking down a negative vote because it doesn't have something doesn't make it a bad deal

@Dougfest NZ: and to preface, I too use flouride paste, drink flouridated water etc, but this season of Science versus investigated fluoride, and uh, it didn't go quite the way I expected. More research needed I guess (by scientists, not me). (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fluoride-is-your-water…)

            • @Dougfest NZ: "But chucking down a negative vote because it doesn't have something doesn't make it a bad deal"
I never said it was a bad deal. I have "Issue with product", which is fine in the voting guidelines. In my view, I don't think we should be promoting pseudoscience products that have caused real, measurable harm in children, as shown in scientific papers.

If you don't think it deserves a downvote, then that's ok too.

Awesome been looking for a locally made fluoride free toothpaste to try, thanks for letting me know its got none

      • Toothpaste is an abrasive, that's the main purpose of it. Fluoride aides in the prevention of cavities, but fluoride is not the point of toothpaste, so yes, this will do more than "jack all", but just not as much as toothpaste that contains fluoride.

        • "Fluoride aides in the prevention of cavities"
I would say that's an essential part of toothpaste - the gold standard.

"this will do more than "jack all""
          Sure, it's better than nothing.

          • @Danielryan: lol it is not the essential part of toothpaste, it's an added benefit, a very good one, because most people don't get enough fluoride in other ways. Plenty of cultures in the world don't even use toothpaste, let alone fluoride from anything except natural sources, and their teeth are fine due to their diet and fact they brush their teeth using things like sticks. Fluoride is not the essential part of toothpaste itself, the abrasion is. Toothpaste removes the plaque, this requires abrasion. Fluoride strengthens the enamel, this doesn't require abrasion or even a paste of any kind.
You'd be no worse off brushing without fluoride toothpaste and then rinsing with a fluoride based mouthwash, because they both have their own purpose, we've just managed to combine them into one.

You can relax now though, the very few commenters here who are anti-fluoride are unlikely to be swayed any further by your comments.

    • Most likely, they were giving these away at aut,

Nano-hydroxyapatite is a good fluoride alternative, similar properties and benefits. Better than nothing, and leave it on your teeth after brushing for max remineralisation benefits

    • Yes it seems to be a good alternative. However, this Red Seal product doesn't use it (though they do have one that does).

        Yep.

I think you’re being too harsh on fluoride free toothpaste. For people with already good oral hygiene, low sugar diets it is OK.

It’s not a psuedoscience product, the added fluoride is an evidence based intervention shown to reduce cavities (especially in lower socioeconomic populations). This doesn’t mean a product excluding fluoride has no benefits or is “against” science. There are still benefits from the abrasive, mechanical action of reducing plague through regular brushing.

At some point, as an end-user you should take responsibility over what you’re buying, and I don’t see any misleading claims being made here.

        • "For people with already good oral hygiene, low sugar diets it is OK."
Not sure if the majority of dentists or reputable health organisations would agree with that statement unless you use an alternative like hydroxyapatite.

"It’s not a psuedoscience product… and I don’t see any misleading claims being made"
Inferior a better word? But they use naturopaths instead of dentists in their oral health blogs and give advice based on small studies. This is a company that's full of quack supplements, and their toothpaste advertising used to have plenty of misleading and scaremongering claims. Over the years, they have dialled back - now with plenty of fluffy claims to make it seem like it could help against certain things.

"At some point, as an end-user you should take responsibility over what you’re buying"
Indeed, I just wish it weren't children that were being harmed.

  • Been using this product for over a decade, since another very famous brand kept damaging my gums. This used to be a “paste”, nowadays a much more watery thing.
RedSeal should just increase its price and keep it real.
Low sugar intake (not the fake stuff) made my dentist rather lonely 😩
    Upvoted, thx.
