    10w-30 fully synthetic oils have become harder to come by these days… Other than Castrol I don't seem to see many alternatives.

    Does anyone have recommendations they can share?

      I recommend using a grade and certification that's specified in your owner's manual.

      I've noticed the same. Look out for Penrite, they do a 10W30 which I think is stocked by SuperCheapAuto every now and then.

      Mobil has some alternatives, Valvoline is good too

      Edit: oh actually just noticed the ones I thought were fully syn are actually semi :(

    • Use a 5w-30. The first number is viscosity when the engine is cold, the second number is viscosity when hot. The lower the number, the lower the viscosity.

      The confusing part is that they are on two different scales, so even though the first number is lower, the oil is always way thicker when cold than when hot.

      The only thing you're changing by switching to a 5w30 from a 10w30 is making the cold viscosity a little bit closer to what it should be at operating temperature, meaning there will be less wear and damage at engine start up and while the engine is warming up.

      It is only beneficial so go for it!

        I have heard that the greater the gap between the cold and hot viscosity numbers, the worse it is for the quality/concentration of the main base oil (for operating temp) - Is that a significant enough factor to not go for a 5w over 10w in this case?

          Nah, that's an old myth from the days of crappy conventional oils. Modern full synthetics use such good base stocks and shear stable VII that the tiny extra in a 5W-30 literally doesn't matter. Zero real world shearing or thinning issues.
          The cold start protection gain is way bigger than any theoretical downside.

    Thanks yes 10w-30 is the one specified in my manual.. It's a 2000 car, fun fact 10w-30 used to be a lot more common and accessible back then. Nowadays 5w-30 seems to be the mainstream replacing 10w-30.

    Any thoughts?

    • this 5W-30 oil would be fine as it has a SL rating which is good for cars made up until 2004. Google 'API SL rating'

        Between two 10w-30 options, would it be better to go for:

        SQ the "latest spec" (but only available in sem-synthetic form).

        Or an SN but in fully synthetic?

        (My 2000 manual asks for 10w-30 and SL)

          I'd say go for the SL, particularly if you can get it cheap right now.

  • just wondering, when i service my car, i can see they have used Castrol Edge Professional OEM 5W-30, is this the same engine oil? if its the same then i would want to pick up for next time so its cheaper.

    • Not many workshops will use an oil you provide to them if that's what you're intending.

  • If I don’t have the skills of changing engine oil myself. are there any workshops so it using the engine oil I provide? If so, how much would they charge?

  • Has anyone else noticed whenever a deal comes up on this engine oil then magically the shelves at your local Mitre 10 becomes empty even though it shows in stock online and also on their internal inventory system. But no one seems to find them in the store.

    I didn’t notice it much the first time but it has happened over and over now.
