  • Wow, 250 USD is the normal lifetime price now, while Emby is only $119 USD is quite a lot cheaper. I recall emby and plex lifetime passess were quite similarly priced when I signed up to plex 7 years ago.

Remember a couple years back when you could get lifetime for like $30 USD using a glitch to get turkey pricing

Woah….. That price has skyrocketed….. So.glad I paid about $80 NZD for Plex Lifetime Pass about 10 or 11 + years ago.

Last rebuild of my Plex Server was 2018…. And it has been running continually since..

First build was around 2014….. The app is has changed A LOT over the years….. Not all for the best.

Some stuff has been pulled out and scrapped and later brought back on several years later (Plex photos stands out) ….. And the interface is wayyyyyy to clutter.

    • What is your latest build?

      • Similar to Dan above. Been plex member since 2012 & plex pass member since 2018 I think

Currently running 2 instances of plex server with build Version 1.43.0.10346. 1 Instance is connected to all the Arrs libraries running on Unraid server. While 2nd one is connected to plex-debrid service running on Proxmox. I don't use photos or music features so never really missed those.

i Use Jellyfin on a old dell computer using cloudflare zero trust for www access i cant fault it works really well even on a 6 th gen intel i7 .
my set up is linux mint cinannon + casaos + jelly fin .(i also use many other apps )

    • I'm very tempted to try jellyfin. My Plex set up seems to have problems at the moment despite having the power to fm transcode just doing audio seems to break it.

I'm also just annoyed at the Plex app, they removed all the photo functionality that I would like to use and downloading media for offline play is just broken and never works. There is use made apps for jellyfin that apparently address these issues.

      • i never tried plex i use linux on all my streaming tv boxes as sff and server linux , and workstaton also linux running cachy os .
I use samba4 (SMB File sharing ) which casaos has inbuilt running on linux also providing docker for easy deployment of container or apps .
I find this really good for files photos etc automatic back up on my workstation i use syncthings ,
i also use KDE Connect on my android phone so it syncs all phone sms etc . and then i send all my important or good photos via photo prism ( docker app ) which i can store on photos on my server it adds some imporant things like ai search and organises the phones for you . YOu can also try immich which is a drop in replacement for google photos .

YOu can also use nextcloud for documents also for photos but i will not use it for photos next cloud is like self hosted google workspace .

        • Yeah I intend to redo immich for photos, it's the local downloads of Plex content that bugs me, it just doesn't work at all.

I have an old i5 4570 running hex is (truenas) with smb shares then an optiplex looking at those shares with it's i7 8700 so the power is there for transcodes, it just freaks out and its only doing audio.

I really want to upgrade the nas PC but can't justify the price to bother. I might try swapping some ram around and then moving the quadro card out of the optiplex and in to the nas and running Plex or jellyfin locally in that box.

          • @Everettpsycho: i think for your video transcoding issue, you need Intel quicksync enabled we need to do this with jellyfin but i didnt have issue even with this not enabled .
When i migrate my server to 9 th gen intel i will enable it , ,
if your thinking of upgrading computer go for 11 th gen intel with iris xe gpu or later generations with iris xe or related igpu ,

i migrated my home workstation on iris xe its a big leap of performance , it also takes lot less power compare to ryzen amd not sure why but intel stack is just super efficient stable fast more like swift on linux . i am not having issues even with my 6th gen intel with jelly fin with my linux so i will just move it to 9th gen, sff it has slightly better igpu and slightly better cpu . but iris xe with linux is a big leap . Nvidia quadro older cards are expensive but are not as efficient nor better for linux set up for desktop environments etc

I got my laptop running iris xe from reboot it australia they offer free shipping to nz i also looked at australian pc traders and they also had many laptops . i use laptop as workstation its cheaper more efficient i have connected two 27 inch screens on it 1080 p you can easily use a tablet pc running iris xe which were around 320 nzd landed . connected to DAS for storage , offering very efficient and fast server set up , runing linux , using DAS is also very power efficient you can use two 3.5 inch hdds about 50 TB storage easily

            • @stardust: If going the das route I'll keep an eye out for mini PCs. I got a gmktec g2 for about $140 a couple of months back and using it as a router now, they are super low powered and good enough for my nas needs as I farm out the heavier processing to the i7 8700 optiplex.

I have a spare 8700 based machine as work offloaded them cheap it just can't take maybe hard drives. I had intended to transplant the main bits to a new motherboard and reuse my very old case and PSU to make a better workstation as we only use laptops at the moment. But lack time and motivation to do it and play games on it.

I have considered seeing what I can learn design wise to see if I can engineer a row of drive bays to insert between the side panel and add as a case widener to turn an optiplex in to a more full featured nas, bit again time is lacking to learn 3D design and prototype such a print.

I have a similar setup but with windows.. did this right after they introduced a charge for remote streaming

      • Only thing i don't like is the subtitle and show theme handling in jellyfin

        • yes it is not good with subtitle aand it freezers when i change the sub , did you try any plugins for subs ? mine also freezes if i change audio tracks in a movie ,. its not perfect

      • windows has lot of over heads , its a good start but i would strongly suggest a light weight desktop environment like xfce ( if you like windows xp or windows 7) or fluxbox( if very old computer,) you can also use kdeplama ( more advance than every one out there ) if you want to use your workstation as server . i would suggest try kdeplama with Mx LInux , if old computer fluxbox with mx linux , XFCE with Linux mint ,Casaos as application layer and SMB file sharing UI/UX
Linux / Debian is like a rock once set up it works for ever and if your on Intel hardware the stack is super efficient just takes few watts on idle even if i push it some times its still just temp peaks in wattages . mine goes upto 70 watts use ai for trouble shooting and reddit etc
